| garri767's Full Review: On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina |
On the Border is one among the many Mexican restaurants in Amarillo, Texas. Although, there is some special charm in this place that keeps us coming back. And since the food is cheap, we can afford to come back. We normally head up to the local On The Border 7 - 10 Times a Month. Today i will be telling you why i keep going back.......
Food
The Food at On The Border is something to get excited about. In fact, i look forward to every visit i have the pleasure to take to On The Border. They have an absolutely wonderful selection at On The Border. Anything (within the boundaries of Mexican food) your stomach aches for can be
found at your local On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina. First, they give you the standard (what you should come to expect from any Mexican food restaurant.) Chips and Salsa. They also have queso dip if you are willing to shell out a few extra dollars. Their Salsa is some of the best out there, not too spicy, not too dull, just right. Our Food never takes more then 45 minutes during peak hours to appear under our noses. During non-peak hours, we sometimes have our food within Twenty-Five minutes. The Food doesn't lack quality either, as we always end up licking our lips on our way out of the door. On the Border's Food definitely gets the job done, and has my approval.
Food Pricing
The Food Pricing here is fairly average. They have some meals that will make your eyes drop out of their sockets at how expensive they are. They also have some of those meals that make you ask yourself, "How can they make a profit selling food this cheap?". Be sure to look over the appetizer menu well, as all of their appetizers are cheap, and some are easily big enough to make a meal out of (like Nachos). Overall, the Food pricing at On the Border is average.
The Bar
The Bar here is nothing to die for. They do serve Killer margaritas though. Here is a list of some of the Margaritas they offer.
-Borderita Grande
-Gold Rocks
-Swirls
-Margarita Selects (You tell them how to make your own, personal margarita)
-OTB Meltdown
The Bar (at our local On the Border at least) also has around four televisions with different football or basketball games running. The Bar is also very very very busy during peak hours, so be sure to get there a tad early if you want a seat before everyone pours in. The Bar at On the Border is also quite average.
Entertainment
Our Local On The Border also has a little stage that mariachi bands perform on to keep you entertained while you eat, or that can help make time pass by faster if you are waiting for your table, or waiting for your food. Most Mexican restaurants in town don't even offer that, so i rate On The Boarder's Entertainment above average.
Staff
The Staff here is very friendly and open to discussion. From the time i entered the restaurant, (the hostess) to when we were eating, (the waiter) to when we grabbed a drink at the bar, (bartender) we learned that On the boarder had an all around loyal and friendly staff. If you are lucky enough (we were), the manager sometimes walks around handing out free gift certificates worth 5$ for the sole purpose of buying a dessert (so they can get you hooked on something). And that little scheme definitely worked on me!
Cleanliness
Cleanliness is really what you would expect from a normal Mexican Restaurant. There are a few Tortilla chips laying around on the ground every couple of feet and a couple of spilled drinks on the floor, but the staff quickly cleans it up to make your experience more enjoyable.
My Food Recommendation
Appetizer: Chips and Salsa (free) with a side of Queso cheese dip (extra charge).
Main Course: Our local On the Border has these little yellow sheets that say "Build your own Burrito" where you pick how you want it cooked. Here are some of the options it gives you
How you want it cooked
-Grilled
-Fried
-Stuffed and Rolled
Sauces you want on it
-Queso cheese
-Sour cream
-Ranchero sauce
Fillings
-Shredded Beef
-Taco Meat
-Chicken
-Lettuce
-Beans
-Queso
-Mexican Rice
-Fajita Beef
-Fajita Chicken
Side Dishes
-Mexican Rice
-Refried Beans
-Pinto Beans
-Salad
I never have had a problem enjoying the Build-Your-Own-Burrito (BYOB) at On the Border.
Other Random Information
We have tried their "To-Go" selection before, and it isn't really any different then eating in, except for a slightly smaller selection and less time waiting for food. You also have your own little reserved parking spots, so you don't have to search for hours for a parking place that you won't need for more then five minutes. Ordering To-Go is definitely convenient in many cases.
Overall
On The Border is a great restaurant for consistant, high quality food for a cheap price. Never fear that you don't have enough money in your wallet, as they always have a cheap meal (or drink) available. Overall, On the Border gets 4 stars from me.
