| kapshus's Full Review: Onkyo HT-S650 Theater System |
I have looked at a number of systems from Bose, Sony, Yamaha, and JBL, and this system easily delivers more for the money. I have been using the system for three months now, and I have no complaints.
Some people have mentioned the "larger" size of the speakers. Yes, they are much bigger than the satellite systems, but they also produce full-spectrum sound that the satellite systems can't match.
I am amazed by the amplified subwoofer. It packs as much punch as anything I've heard, including $1000 subs.
Aesthetically speaking, the speakers are all black oak with fabric grills. One minor quibble, the grills don't come off the surround speakers which makes cleaning the dust off of them is a bit more difficult.
But let's talk sound. I have a 12 x 17 listening room and I never turn the volume up more than 50 of 80 (max). This system is just so loud, it could easily fill a room twice this size. Amazing. The highs are crisp and I have yet to hear the sub struggle with any music or movie. As I stated earlier, the larger cones on the speakers also provide midrange support which is crucial for dialogue.
I can't believe this setup is available for under $500.
