42ENGLISH's Full Review: Oral B Pulsar Pro Health Toothbrush 40, Soft 1 Ea
I have always had problems with my teeth due to a medication (Dilantin) I have had to take most of my life for epilepsy. It causes gingivitis, sensitive gums and eventual gum overgrowth in 70 percent of people who take it so dental hygiene is very important. I feel lucky, at the age of 52, to still have some of my teeth but unfortunately had to have my top teeth extracted and replaced with dentures a few months ago.
After having my bottom teeth cleaned yet again, I was urged by my dentist to use any kind of battery powered or electric toothbrush in order to remove the excess plaque that builds up. I had always avoided these because my gums are so sensitive and I have always had to use the softest of brushes. Funds are scarce right now after Hurricane Ike hit us. Financially, I am still crawling out of a pit after losing everything single thing I owned. So, after putting my priorities in order, I came to the conclusion that something cheap would have to do for now.
I had seen ads on TV for the Oral B Pulsar Toothbrush and after reading some reviews on it here at Epinions, I immediately went in search for one. God must have been looking down on me because I had headed for the Dollar Store first to stock up on toilet tissue and paper towels. Low and behold, a 2-pack of soft bristle Oral B Pulsars in the 50 percent off cart which was sitting right by the toilet tissue. I only paid $10.00 for 2 of them. That was a “Godsend.”
Manufacturer’s take:
The manual brush with deep cleaning power.
Pulsar has soft vibrating bristles that help break up plaque between teeth. Just turn it on and brush as you would with a regular manual brush. Plus, Pulsar’s pressure-sensitive split head adjusts to the contours of your teeth to clean hard-to-reach places while moderating the amount of pressure applied to teeth and gums.
The result is an effective clean and an outstanding sensory experience. Penetrates deep between teeth Sweeps away food and plaque from the tooth surface Adjusts to the contours of your teeth Moderates the amount of pressure applied to your teeth and gums
My Experience:
This toothbrush is robust with a thick, strong neck and has a rubber, formed grip on the handle. The buttons to turn this brush on and off are on the neck of the toothbrush and require a simple touch. The regular bristles are surrounded by outer rubber gum massagers with a split-head design
I was a little anxious about the vibrations of this battery-powered toothbrush. As I said, my gums are very sensitive and they bleed easily so it had to be a more gentle vibration. The vibration was quite gentle actually and not noisy like I expected. It caused no problems and the brush itself was gentle enough to clean and massage my teeth and gums without any bleeding. My teeth felt extra clean and smooth. I always use a mouthwash that reveals plaque left behind so that I can make sure it’s gone. It revealed only a couple of small areas that I missed and that was quickly fixed. My regular toothbrush always showed much more plaque left behind. I was impressed.
Dentures also need brushing and after an overnight soak in Polident, I find this brush is a lot more effective in cleaning my dentures too. Its shape allows me to brush in the hollows and it left my dentures sparkly clean.
Conclusion:
I have to admit that I was sure that any kind of electronic or battery-operated toothbrush would irritate my sensitive gums. However, my teeth and gums have been healthier and cleaner since I have been using the Oral B PulsarToothbrush. Although this is a cheaper brush, it has been doing its job well and I am very satisfied with its performance. The first brush lasted about 6 weeks, the second about 5 weeks. I am now on the third brush and for 10 dollars, my purchase was a steal.
The head on this toothbrush is not replaceable and neither is the battery but even for its regular price, I think this toothbrush is well worth the money.
