cmaw63's Full Review: PEDIGREE LARGE BREED Food for Adult Dogs
PEDIGREE LARGE BREEDFood for Adult Dogs proclaims itself to be good for your dogs overall health with its "new and improved patented PEDIGREE HEALTHY NUGGETS with Meaty Centers kibble".
What's so new and improved about it? Thanks for asking...
Let's start with overall health and Pedigree's "ADVANCED ANTIOXIDANT RECIPE blend (including vitamins C & E) to help protect every cell in your dog's body". Well, according to our dog's veteranarian she is "the epitome of health". Really, the only way to back up this claim is to buy an expensive microscope and check every cell one by one. We happen to like our dog the way she is, so we'll just take Pedigree's word on this one.
Calcium and phosphorus are added for strong teeth and bones. If you ever saw our dog's teeth, this one would be easy to believe. They are white, clean and BIG. Rawhide bones are nothing more than a short term treat to her. Her bones appear to be fine, as we've had no problems with her physical abilities.
Omega Fatty Acids are included in the food to help maintain healthy skin and shiney coat. The healthy skin part is easy. Greta, our dog, is a versatile hunting dog. She loves to scramble thru brush and brambles, resulting in scratches and cuts. Her skin heals fast, with no scarring. Since, Greta has a wire type hair, the shiney coat just isn't a consideration of ours. She does have PLENTY of hair, as the mounds of it I sweep up in the house will attest to.
Strong muscles are aided by the proteins(amino acids) that are included in the ingredients. Greta NEEDS strong muscles and this food seems to deliver. In the morning she may be swimming in the river to fetch geese and ducks. Later, the same afternoon she will point pheasant or quail and retrieve them. We've had no problems with pulls, strains or any of the variety of muscle problems and, Greta, never seems to tire.
The ingredients are said to be highly digestible and easily absorbed for healthy digestion. This may be so, but here's where we run into a problem. We follow the recommended feeding guide: (found on Pedigree Large Breed Package)
WEIGHT OF DOG** CUPS PER DAY +
55 to 75 lbs......4 to 5 cups
75 to 95 lbs......5 to 6 cups
95 to 120 lbs.....6 to 7 cups
140 to 165 lbs....7 to 8 cups
165 to 190 lbs....9 to 10 cups
Over 190 lbs..... 10 Cups + 1/2 cup per 10 lbs. > 190 lbs.
Greta is 73 lbs, but since she is so active we give her the 6 cups/per day. That amount was not maintaining her weight at all. She likes this dog food and eats it well. When we tried another brand to increase her weight, she did not tolerate it at all. She suffered from frequent loose stools, weight loss and became easily tired. We switched back to Pedigree Large Breed and started adding a can of moist Pedigree dog food to each meal. This has not only maintained, but increased her weight to a level we feel is needed for her strenuous activities.
The price is right. We pay $14.99 for a 40 lb bag that lasts 2 weeks.
Pedigree Large Breed dog food appears to live up to it's claims. Our dog is healthy in all aspects and likes the taste of the brown chunk/tan bone shaped food.
**Greta's breed, Deutsch Drahthaar, was not listed. That is the reason breed is marked as "don't know".**
