We’ve owned two PUR Water Pitchers for about the past six years. And, while that might lead you to believe that this is one incredibly well engineered and built pitcher, the truth is that until recently they had been retired to a closet in our garage. The Xenos are not known for throwing things away. Why you ask were they banished to the garage and what’s behind their reinstatement?
Whenever I’m home there is always an iced beverage by my side. Yes, there is a large 21oz. glass of ice water with me now. Therein lies the only real reservation I ever had regarding this otherwise excellent water pitcher. It has a small 7 cup capacity. With me drinking easily in excess of a gallon of water a day I found that I was filling the pitcher constantly.
And, once we learned to replace the filter in our GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator, we could have all the fresh tasting purified water without the hassle. We’ll get to the part about why we’re using it again later. Let’s talk about the pitcher first.
The PUR Pitcher Why we chose the PUR Pitcher over the then more popular Brita was solely a matter of chance. We happened to be in a store that was featuring it that weekend and was also offering their filters at a deep discount. We stocked up.
The PUR Pitcher is an oval-shaped heavy duty plastic pitcher with two chambers inside. Popping the top off exposes the upper chamber above the filter. The filter fits securely into an orifice separating the two chambers. Filling the upper chamber with tap water, it slowly passes thru the filter until you are left with 56 ozs. of clean, fresh tasting water.
The charcoal activated filter rids the water of chlorine, lead, copper, mercury, organic matter and sediment. Having had our tap water here in Boca Raton, Fl tested, our chief concern was the strong chlorine taste. The PUR Pitcher excelled at eliminating the problem.
The pitcher has a sturdy plastic handle that runs down its side and feels secure in your hand. Its oval shape allows it to be stored conveniently in one of the shelves of the refrigerator door.
Economics The economics of the PUR Pitcher are compelling. Each filter will purify 40 gallons of water. Filters are available for a price of between $6 - $8 each. Gallon jugs of drinking water are usually priced at about $1.50 a gallon or more. Smaller disposable bottles are considerably more costly. Even given the initial cost of the Pur Pitcher (currently $16.99) the economics favor the refillable PUR Pitcher. And, of course with the PUR Pitcher you eliminate the need to recycle yet more plastic bottles.
Shortcomings I’ve already discussed the capacity issue earlier. Unless you don’t mind refilling the pitcher on a very frequent basis, it is not well suited for families consuming more than a few cups of water each day.
There is also the matter of the pitcher’s top. It lacks a hinge. It must be entirely removed and can be easily misplaced (well, at least in this household). The top also does not protect the spout. The spout is left uncovered. Honestly, I consider neither of these two shortcomings a serious drawback.
Reinstatement So why after all this time are we once again using the PUR Pitcher? Well, not too long ago we purchased a Polar 24 oz. Refillable Water Bottle to replace the disposable bottles my daughter took with her to school each day. It was our conveniently green thing of the month. As it turns out, it is difficult, although not impossible to fill the Polar Bottle from the dispenser on the Refrigerator door. Call it hit and miss messy. It’s far more convenient filling the Polar Bottle each morning from the PUR Pitcher.
Bottom Line The PUR Pitcher does an excellent job at purifying tap water. While I have an issue with its small capacity, it is inherent in the design of this and similar filtering pitchers. For couple’s and small families the PUR Pitcher is probably sufficient for daily use. I find it generally well-made and easy to store in your refrigerator. It is an economical solution to “undrinkable” tap water.
