This is probably my 3rd Palm Pilot. And my nth PDA.
This Palm Pilot has everything you need. And the fact that it has an expandable slot, it opens the possibility for more features. The biggest dilemma for me is finding a truly USEFUL PDA. The Sharp Wizard was big and lacked features; The Newton was great but was too big and you're better off with a Powerbook; The Palm 3 was a hazard to my vision and lacked the cool factor; The PocketPCs are useless for Mac Users- and for that matter, the Sony Clie isn't very Mac friendly.
The Palm m505 is really cool looking. It's almost identical to the Palm V with only slight cosmetic upgrades (i.e. smaller scroll button, curvier). The biggest and obvious advantage to this new Palm is the color LCD. It's pretty good, but I think they could have made it brighter and more colorful. But I'm not that picky. Also, none of the Palm V stuff fits on the new m505. Oh well...
I use Microsoft's Entourage as my PIM (Personal Information Manager). Though the Mac's Palm Desktop is a lot faster, it isn't as robust as MS' Entourage. It took me a few minutes to have it all setup so that my Entourage would sync with the Palm. After a few attempts, I got all my info into the m505. Cool. I have it setup with USB sync, but while on the road I can easily sync it with the IR port.
One big change is the note pad button. The memo pad is now an application. The Note Pad hard button is a great tool for writing quick things with your own handwriting. My grafitti ability has improved over the years but for quick note-taking or drawing that button comes in pretty handy.
My biggest complaint is that the memory isn't big enough. The CD comes with PhotoSuite, an application that allows you to carry digital photos with you. Yeah, sure, that's what the expansion slot is for. But I'd rather have my little photo album already built-in the Palm. I have about 8 or 9 Jpegs of family photos, etc, and it took almost 3/4 of my memory. I could readjust them with Photoshop, but nah... I could live without the picture of myself on the Palm.
