I have to admit that I know very little about new music. I listen to NPR and do not have much patience for commercial radio. Like most teenagers and young adults, I was very aware of new music until about my late twenties/early thirties. These days, I seem to rely nostalgia, movies and other media to discover new and interesting music.
Fortunately, I live in Decatur, Georgia, which has a very active music scene (I think this is where all the music folks from Athens moved when they grew up). A few years ago I was reading our local Decatur newsletter, and ran across an article about Paste magazine. I was intrigued enough to check it out and eventually subscribe and am glad I did.
Paste magazine is a music and entertainment magazine that seems to be made for people like me. The writing is fairly smart and the coverage of music, film, and other entertainment focuses on introducing readers to many of the hidden gems that they may be missing. Each issue includes a sampler CD, which in itself, is worth the price of a subscription. The magazine's accompanying web site also offers a rich trove of articles and music, so you can sample music over the internet. You can order CDs directly from Paste (and they will even make suggestions if you aren't quite sure what you want to buy).
Paste magazine is a great way to discover new artists and listen to music that is probably too smart and too interesting to find its way onto popular radio.
