Were my expectations set too high?

Pros: Went to Brooklyn for the first time...or is that a con.
Cons: Steak wasn't cooked properly and appetizers were boring.
The Bottom Line: Considering the many other steak houses in NYC, I wouldn't come back to Peter Luger's.

This was my first trip to NYC, and everyone told me that the trip would not be complete without a meal at Peter Luger's. My boyfriend and I went there for lunch since we couldn't get a dinner reservation at a reasonable time.
The menu is very simple. They even asked if we wanted to see a menu. We ordered the "Steak for 2", the tomato and onion appetizer, the bacon appetizer, and the German potatoes (I think that was what they were called, but the only other potato options were fries or baked).
First came the tomato and onion appetizer (~$8) with PL's special sauce. There were no frills with this one. It consisted of 5 half inch slices of tomatoes (4" in diameter) with 4 slices of white onion layered in between. The special sauce (which was already at the table) was their house steak sauce which seemed like fancy ketchup with some horse radish. It was more of a cocktail sauce to me than a steak sauce. The bacon appetizer, which you order by the slice for $2, was just a thick piece of bacon. It was tasty, but it was just bacon. I ate the bacon with the tomato and onion to spice things up a little.
The Steak - My boyfriend likes his steak medium-well while I like it medium. I'm a huge steak fan so I was really excited for this meal. Since we ordered the "Steak for 2" (~$65), the waiter suggested that we order it medium and my boyfriend could continue "cooking" his meat on the very hot serving tray. We agreed, but then were surprised as to why they couldn't cook the steak to our specifications. We thought the "Steak for 2" was going to be one really big steak, but it was actually 2 separate porterhouse steaks. Now why they couldn't cook one medium and one medium-well, I don't know. The main disappointment with the steak was that it was still dripping in blood. It was nowhere close to medium. We ending up using the very hot serving tray to cook our rare steak to a medium-rare state. The quality of meat was very good and there was a lot of meat. I hate to waste food, especially very expensive food, but I still left a lot of steak on the table. The "Steak for 2" is enough for 3.
The restaurant is very simple with a German charm. Thick wood tables with no table cloths. Other appetizers on the menu include just the tomato appetizer (~$7), green salad (~$7-9), french fries, baked potatoes, and creamed spinach. I can't remember all of the prices, but they were about $5-9. They had a single steak for $30. This is a different cut of meat, so not the porterhouse. They also had the "Steak for 3, 4, and so on". Averaged about $32 per person. Also on the menu were daily specials which include steaks, chicken, fish, and a side dish. Those ranged from $20-30 if I remember correctly. Wasn't interested in those so I didn't read that part of the menu carefully.
Things to note:1) Reservations are hard to come by, so make them early or be prepared to eat dinner at 2pm or 11pm. 2)Careful if you're an iced tea drinker. They charge by the glass. I can understand this when they serve it from a bottle of iced tea, but the bottle was never presented. Therefore, I thought it was your usual pitcher of iced tea which includes the refills.
3) They only take cash or the Peter Luger's credit card. We were lucky to be carrying the $110 for our meal. 4) I wouldn't take the subway there at night unless you're with a big group. It didn't look like a great part of town.
