Collecting Pez dispensers is a passion; what started out as a novelty type candy has grown into a almost billion dollar a year merchandising market. With characters from NASCAR, Hello Kitty Pez Collection, Orange County Choppers, Ice Age, Disney characters and the usual Pez seasonal dispensers, it would seem that you haven't made your mark in the world until you have been immortalized in the form of a plastic Pez dispenser. The SpongeBob SquarePants assortment is rather limited and only includes [so far] Squidward, SpongeBob and Patrick. Even so, there are three 'different' SpongeBob dispensers to collect but the only difference between them are the colors of the bases or stems.
SpongeBob SquarePants Pez Collection
You can purchase these individually or in a dozen count box. The advantage of buying them but the box is that you do get a nice price break on them but you don't get to pick out the dispensers that you get. If you buy them individually you can pick the ones that you get buy you can pay up to two dollars a piece for them. Wal-Mart generally has the lowest price on Pez dispensers but they only sell the cardboard mounted ones, not the ones in plastic sleeves which is the most common way that you will find these. If you are into SpongeBob or know someone that is, these make for really nice small gifts. They are suggested for kids ages three and over because of the size of the candy that comes with it.
Each dispenser comes with two sleeves of candy; you never know which flavor you will get but the most common are fruit assortment, lemon, grape and orange. I recently found the cherry flavor at my local grocery store but there were no UPC codes on them so I have to assume they were shipped to them accidentally. The manager sold me the entire box for five dollars, what a steal! The purpose of a Pez dispenser is pretty obvious, its a cute way to get your sugar fix. Open the wrapper, insert the candy then tip the head backwards to have a single piece pop out. As it stands, I know more adults that collect Pez than kids and some of the rare dispensers can fetch upwards of $500.00 at toy conventions. It might take a while for these to reach that type of price but if they are axed out of Pez production, you can almost guarantee that the prices on them will steadily rise over time.
If you buy these by the case you will not get the discontinued SpongeBob SquarePants Underwear Pez; this was something that was only on the market briefly [no pun intended] and was pulled by Pez after complaints. You may still be able to find these in smaller candy stores or toy stores that have no clue what they are worth. The average list price for one still in the package is over $25.00 so if you happen to spot on of these and they are two or three dollars, you can toss it on eBay and make some extremely quick cash or hold on to it and watch the price go up on it every year.
My biggest complaints about the set is the inclusion of three SpongeBob dispensers. They are identical except for the colors of the bases; red, blue and yellow. Instead of having three almost exact duplicates they could have had other characters added to the series. Squidward looks awesome in the pale green color and he has his usual spur puss expression. Patrick is done up with a purple stem and usual big grin on his face. The dispensers are all authentic and sanctioned items but they are getting harder and harder to find because of an unresolved licensing agreement.
The Bottom Line
I am glad that I got these when they first came out; I paid a little more for them than I normally would for any standard issue Pez but seeing as how they are getting a little on the rare and hard to find side of things, they were worth it. The SpongeBob Pez are a nice addition to any Pez collection and make for great gifts for those who are into the cartoon. They are well made and rarely break but that doesn't mean that they are indestructible. I really hope that things work out as far as licensing goes; it would be awesome to have a Plankton, Sandy Squirrel or Mr. Krabs Pez! Just think, they could make limited edition green Pez candies just for Plankton. Hey, a girl can dream can't she?
As always, thanks for the visit
