| vijaygt's Full Review: Philips AZ9101 Personal CD Player |
The title says it all. This CD is, IMO, the best portable CD player in its price range. There are sooo many good things i have to say about this unit, i am going to point out only the truly nice features (and the truly bad problems).
The Good:
1. Sound quality - for me, the most important thing, and this player sends out nice sound thanks to a 1-bit DAC (whatever that means)
2. Price - I refuse to shell out over $100 for a portable CD player, but that doesn't mean i want to buy trash. For $65 at my local Best Buy, i feel this was a steal!
3. Design - While this isn't the most compact CD player around, it looks good with a cool translucent cover that lets you watch the CD spin (especially interesting with CDs that have numerous colors on them...)
4. DBB - Actually, this isn't a feature i normally use, since most bass boosts tend to bloat the entire bass or lower mid-range, resulting in a sickly, bubbly sound. The Philips has two DBB settings, and the first gives more impactful bass (wahoo!) and cleans up some of the mid-range, while the second simply makes it unbearable, to me. So, no matter how you want to hear the CD, you can get with this CD player.
5 ESP - This is a very nice feature, though it is now standard on almost all CD players in this price range. The ESP does tend to accent sibilants, but nearly all of them do. Other than that, the ESP has no flaws, working for up 3 seconds when being violently shaken (i had to try.... :) and around 80 seconds when being tapped on the lid. The tapping works really well when trying to simulate going on a bumpy road or something like that.
The Bad:
1. Line Out - my only gripe with the unit, this wonderful CD player can't achieve a perfect score because it doesn't have a line-out. A real bummer if you want to connect it to your main speaker system or a headphone amplifier.
