Pros: Cheap.
Cons: Lousy audio performance, slow response to controls.
The Bottom Line: Haven't tested video performance yet. Audio was POOR using CDs. Not going to even bother buying an SACD to try on it.

| compcond's Full Review: Philips DVD763SA DVD Player |
Before I write anything there are a few things the reader of this review should know: I am an audiophile. I haven't even tried to watch a DVD on this thing yet. My office audio system is good; my home system is incredible and this player is totally inappropriate for it.
Noting that, there is absolutely nothing Super about this player's audio. On my office system I played several audio CDs and 1 DVD of Eric Clapton; there is no depth, little detail, and the sound is tinny. Not only is this player's CD performance bested by my 10+ year old bottom-of-the-line Nakamichi CDPlayer 4 but a Technics SL-MC310 101 disk changer (which I use as a glorified CD holder because it sounds so bad) is better. This is through a Harman-Kardon HK3470 receiver and 20 year old home-built speakers with DynAudio drivers using a Belkin 12' cable.
Bringing it home I played only 2 CDs (partial... couldn't take it for very long), but they both sounded like I was listening to MP3s (these were original CDs). Any sense of space and detail had been sanitized out, the sound was overly bright, and mechanical performance of the drive is SLOW. Admittedly this player is inappropriate for the rest of the system (Conrad-Johnson electronics and custom Dynaudio speakers with a HSU sub and Tara Labs cables), but I was hoping for decent performance with which to try an SACD or two... NOT.
For $90 (buy.com less $10 rebate), my parents now have a DVD player. Realistically for anyone who has purchased a "normal" audio system (anything from Circuit City or the like or a system that cost less than a decent used car) it should make a fine DVD player. I strongly advise anyone to forget the SACD capabilities of this machine.
