| theppler's Full Review: Pioneer DV-440 DVD Player |
Before I purchased this unit, I shopped around to find all of the features I wanted (good quality MP3 playback, optical digital output). This one turned out to be the best for the money.
It's slim design really caught my eye too. When you think about it, there is just no need for a DVD player to be as big as a VCR. Since it replaced my old CD player and I finally got rid of that obsolete tape deck, it is surprising how little room my stereo components take up now.
When I got it hooked up and went through it's "setup wizard" for the first time, everything was so simple. After playing around with it more, I noticed how to get into more advanced settings and really configure it how you want. The onscreen menus are transparent which makes it nice to be able to play with the settings while a DVD is playing.
The remote is a little confusing but that doesn't matter to me because I will be replacing it with my universal learning remote anyways. The buttons on it are small and not in the most intuitive places.
MP3s encoded in up to 320kbps seem to play just fine. MP3 navigation is a breeze. Just burn MP3s into whatever directories you wish onto a CD-R or CD-RW and it will pick them up. The navigation window is quite simple to use as long as you can understand your 8 character file names. This 8 character limitation is a problem with all players I looked at. I couldn't find any that showed the full filename.
Apparently it plays pretty much everything you could throw at it (CDR, CDRW, DVDR, DVDRW, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, MP3).
Sound quality is difficult to judge in a system with all digital connections (using the optical or coaxial digital audio output). The unit will decode the compressed audio stream from the disc using a standard algorithm. One player will NOT do this better than another. It is digital data so it will either be correct or incorrect.
