Freak369's Full Review: Pittsburgh Penguins Lanyard
If you are a Penguins fan you know that there are tons of Pens related items on the market, likewise, if you are someone that lives with a Pens fan you are always on the look out for new items or things that make great gifts. While I do admit that I love going to the Penguin games, they aren’t my all time favorite hockey team in the NHL. To save myself from getting death threats I won't mention my favorite team but their colors are red and white. The Pittsburgh Penguin Lanyard is a nice, inexpensive but useful item that you can get for yourself or pick up as a gift for that special hockey goon in you life.
There are three different designs to choose from; the other two do not have the plastic clip that can be removed from the lanyard and while they are about a dollar less they aren't as functional. Now that I'm temporarily in a wheelchair I've found this to be an incredible help when I have to get in and out of the house. I don't have to dig for my house key and can remove the plastic clip if I'm not close enough to the lock. I don't have to fumble with my regular key chain, take my gloves off or worry about dropping the key when I'm trying to unlock the door.
I bought several of these for grab bag gifts last year and when I needed something that I could put a house key on, it was the absolute best pick. The fact that it has the Penguins logo on it makes it that much nicer. It is a one size fits all type of item so even if you have a huge head, the twenty inch length slips on and off easily. It's thick enough that it doesn't fold over onto itself or get warped. I got these at a fan store in the Strip District for $5.00 each, if you buy them during the hockey season you can expect to tack on a few more dollars to that price.
This is not a breakaway lanyard, it has the ability to come apart from the actual fabric portion but it doesn't come away just from pulling on it. When I first saw this I thought that it was a safety feature, that you could just grab the key section, pull on it and it would come apart. That isn't the case, you have to squeeze the edges of the plastic section to get it to release. If you are looking for something that has a true breakaway feature to it, this isn't it. You can use the round metal loop or the kidney shaped clasp for keys, I removed the clasp since it wasn't necessary for just one single key.
One of the nicest things about this is that it can be machine washed with dark colors. I do suggest that you put it in a laundry bag so that it doesn't get tangled in with other clothes or the spinner and remove the end tab with the plastic clip prior to washing. I've washed this a few times and the colors on it still look great so it is something that you can have for years if you take care of it properly. Having the ability to machine or hand wash this is really nice, if you wear it in the summer or outdoors and sweat a lot you don't have to worry about it looking haggard or like its been dragged through the mud.
I do suggest that you wash this before you wear it. It can be a little rough out of the package and washing it before you wear it will remove the chances that you will end up with marks on your neck if you sweat or it gets wet. We learned that the hard way when someone got doused with beer after a game, their neck had a ring around it and we couldn't figure out how it got there until he took off the lanyard and we saw the Penguin logo was gray instead of white.
For less than ten dollars you can get a great officially licensed Penguin lanyard for yourself or to give as a gift. They come packaged in plastic with a cardboard hang tag so you may way to pop it into something else if you are giving it as a gift, you can always get a Pittsburgh Penguin Christmas Stocking or for teens and tweens one of the pull over sweatshirts that will keep them warm in the winter months without cramping their oh-so-delicate style.
