| Freak369's Full Review: Pittsburgh Steelers 16 Oz Cups |
Almost buried in the Strip District of Pittsburgh is a magical little store called The Mike Feinberg Company. Most of the locals just call it Feinberg's. It's a cramped store with lots of local merchandise including post cards, shot glasses, the occasional piece of clothing and of course tons of Terrible Towels. It is a mecca for fans of the Penguins, Pirates and Steelers and a great place to hit if you are panning a party. Their stock of Steeler items is impressive and even though I am not a fan of football in general, when it's time to tailgate, it's time to hit Feinberg's for supplies. Last season we bought more cups than plates, why you ask? Because people tend to drink more than they eat at house parties or at the parking lot for local games. The 16 ounce Steeler cups were a nice buy but I would have rather spent more and gotten the thick plastic mugs that could be used over and over again.
Pittsburgh Steelers 16 Ounce Plastic Cups
The cups that are shown are one of many different Steeler themed plastic cups in the sixteen ounce size; they are comparable to a disposable Solo plastic cup that's suitable for cold drinks. The Steelers logo appears on the front side of the cup; the blue, red and yellow [gold] stars are dead on balls accurate to the actual logo on Steeler uniforms and of course the wording is the same as well. If you are looking to get the cups that are pictured here you are going to spend a little bit more than the clear plastic ones that have the Steelers name and logo on them as well as the clear ones that have the Steeler helmet; those are both sold by the dozen for about six dollars. The ones pictured here cost $8.00 at Feinberg's and also come by the dozen. Why do they cost more? They have a better grade of plastic and are a little bit thicker.
The cups pictured are intended for use only with cold drinks and food; I've seen people eat pretty much everything out of cups like this including fruit salad, ice cream and sides like coleslaw and potato salad. Why arent these good for hot foods? Well, first they can get tacky, not meaning that they start to look bad but they lose some strength. Second, they dont insulate things well so after about 30 seconds your hand feels just as hot as whatever is in the cup. If you are going to grab some chili and it's not steaming hot you might be able to get away with eating it out of one of these cups but anything else and you are asking for trouble. As far as reusing them, I have washed them out if I'm switching drinks but reusing them from party to party is more effort than its worth.
One thing that really irks me about cups like this are the lip on the edge. You go to take a gulp and all of a sudden you end up with soda or beer all over you. That's what happens when the lip isnt rolled the whole way under the side of the cup. So far I have never had this problem with this specific mug but the other ten and sixteen ounce mugs that are sold with the Steeler logo on them will leave you soaking wet if you aren't careful. These are a good pick if you are going to have kids at a party; they arent too top heavy and they are thick enough that they will be able to run around with them without them getting squeezed to death or collapsing.
My only real complaint about this is that the teal blue ring around the outside of the logo is supposed to look like steel, it doesn't. Even so, it is a well made cup that comes in handy for serving beer from the keg [plenty of room for foam] or drinks with ice. I wouldn't try to recycle them from party to party because they can get that funky smell to them if you have served alcohol in them. The plastic mugs that are 24 and 30 ounces are a lot more durable but cost more; you can wash them and use them over and over but there is always a chance of them retaining the smell of alcohol or having them get lost.
The Bottom Line
When you add up the pros and cons these do come out on top but if you are planning a huge part you will need several sleeves and that can get pretty expensive. I like the overall strength of them and that they can hold up to a day of football but I really wish I could have talked Tommy into getting the tumblers or the mugs so they could get used over and over. If you are going to order these online make sure that you are getting these specific cups; black on the outside and white on the inside. The clear ones are thinner and won't last as long as these and even though they are a little less expensive, they aren't worth saving a dollar or two because people will go through more of them.
As always, thanks for the visit
