The Bottom Line: Because you don't have to live in Cali to enjoy good surf music.

| sibhreach's Full Review: Pizza & Sushi - Various Artists Movies |
Now that the weather's getting better here in the Pacific Northwest, it was time I get introduced to other music. Any reason is a good one to get introduced to new music.
This CD sampler of 60's surf music is awesome for that drive down to the coast, a day outside in the sunshine, or even in your living-room with all your lamps on and the heating turned up at about 80 degrees. Anything to help get you into the surfing mood.
In all honesty, I have to blame Kill Bill, Vol. 1 because the hubby and I listened (and liked) the band "5, 6, 7, 8's" and knew there just had to be other bands out there. Well, if I have to go blaming everyone, I would also have to point a finger at CD Baby! - a local-to-me, mail-order CD store that is all independent, all the time. After the movie, we went hunting and found Pizza & Sushi, a compilation album that had us swaying to the music.
Since this is such a small compilation (4 songs, 4 different bands), I'm willing to go track-by-track and, really, it's worth it. Listen on....
Starting off with a very instrumental Tarantino-esque (think Pulp Fiction) song, Cajun Curl by the Italian band "Cosmonauti" is mellow with fabulous electric guitar that's strummed, not thrashed. You know it's good when you find yourself unable to stop yourself from doing a John Travolta-as-Vincent sort of head bop. It's sedate and you feel cool, even though - deep down - you know you look like a dork. That's okay, the song's only 2 minutes long.
Honey & Sandwich by the Japanese surfer band, "Mummy the Peepshow" (where do they come up with these funky names?!) starts off mellow - with little-girl voices and then it dives into a sort of surfer-punk. I can't discern what is being sung, but I suppose that's not the point of surfer music, yeah? Honey & Sandwich is taken from another album of theirs called Electric Rollergirl. This is one of those songs that's great at summer parties - for drunken dancing (just be sure to move the furniture and breakables beforehand).
It's the next Japanese surfer band, "Petty Booka" which has the selling-point song of this album, from what it seems: Bla bla bla Cha cha cha. That's what sold this album to my husband. He liked the other songs, too, but this one most resembled the "5, 6, 7, 8's" to him. It's a great song - very swanky/sassy. Out of the four songs, this one is on my iPod.
The final tune is from the Italian group "Bradipos IV" (as in Roman numeral "4") with Kissin' Bonobo Roll and, although it feels lighter than Cajun Curl, it's sort of the flipside of the same coin. Where the first song has that "cooler than you" vibe, Kissin' Bonobo Roll is more like "swivel your hips, you sexy person, you". Go on, swivel. I won't laugh. That song is also on their Instro-Mania!! album.
What I was expecting when I first saw this album was a meshing of Italian and Japanese surf, but it's more of a mixture. There are four bands playing one song a piece - which is fine, but I sure wish there were more tracks on this album. Four just isn't enough. Then again, I'm not one to listen to surf music constantly, anyway.
In a way, this album works out perfectly.
Lastly, I got this at CD Baby! and most (if not all) of the music is "try before you buy". Listen to the album for yourself: http://cdbaby.com/cd/pizzasushi
Thanks to them, I could swear off commercial music for good.

(Disclaimer: I do not work for CD Baby! nor do I know anyone who works for this company. I just like to buy local and they definitely have an awesome site with amazing artists you've probably never heard of.)
More on the bands, themselves (I surf the internet so you don't have to):
Cosmonauti (Italian surf band)
http://www.zptdudamusic.com/cosmonauti/
Listen to their Just Surf and Bikini Angel albums in little 1 minute snippets. They seem to be trying to break into the American market.
Mummy the Peepshow (Japanese)

The website is pretty annoying - striped in yellow and white like a bench tent (which is also the look of their latest album Electric Rollergirl - and there's no mp3's to listen to their other stuff - but a discography and they've been busy!
Petty Booka (Japanese)
http://www.sister.co.jp/pettybooka/pb_e_mp3.html
There are several CD's listed here and there are 3 songs a piece you can listen to from this band.
Bradipos IV (Italian)
http://www.bradipos4.com/Home.htm
This site is really neat and if you click on the "Download" link at the top, you have 5 songs and 4 live performances to have all your own without spending a dime. Pretty spiffy!
