| Freak369's Full Review: Playmobil 3 Pirates |
Sometimes you never really appreciate something until it's gone, broken or becomes valuable; I never really paid much attention to the Pirate theme from Playmobil since I only collected the individual figures and there weren't many to pick from. Playmobil must have been listening to all those letters that kids wrote asking for more pirate themed sets because they came out with some very cute, err umm I mean swashbuckling good sets! This is one of the few three man sets that they make and it's a great way to increase the number of pirates you have or to add some color to a collection of figures. When every started jumping on board with the Johnny Depp / Orlando Bloom "Pirates of The Caribbean" movies these sets and the whole series really took off. All of a sudden little boys wanted to be pirates, search for treasure and celebrate "Talk Like A Pirate Day". If Playmobil would have been thinking they could have had a huge marketing blitz on their hands and could have slid these into Kid's Meals and trumped the Hasbro / Mc Donald's duo.
Playmobil 3 Pirates
This is a really nice set for anyone that's into pirates, collects Playmobil related items or has some of the larger sets. It's one of the cheapest ways to increase the people count / pirate count outside of buying the one person sets that, after a while, get a bit boring. That's one of the nice things about the Playmobil series, you can mix and match the pieces in the standard sets [not counting the 1-2-3 Grow With Me sets] to create new figures, add accessories or weapons and build up a nice stock of extra pieces. Kids that really get into using their imagination will have a field day with this set, especially when it's combined with others from the series. I really like the fact that all three of them are unique; each of them have their own little special characteristics so you could buy several of these sets, rip them apart and create a ton of unique figures from them. I've chosen to give these little guys names since each of them is on a different part of my desk, these are just names that I've given them so don't expect them to have the same names when you read through the various Playmobil literature.
Peg Leg Pete
Clad in a nice admirals hat, Peg Leg Pete is the spitting image of the Sea Robber, [the same as Pirate Captain 7668] in fact it's the same identical figure. One of the coolest things about this figure is the parrot that comes with it; you will need to assemble it but it's a snap [no pun intended]. Pete has a peg leg, hence his name. The faux leg is not removable so don't waste your time trying. His comes with a stenciled eye patch, nice uniform and red cuffs to accent his royal blue jacket.
Bloomin' Bobby
Bare foot but always ready for action, this figure is one of two red heads in the set. His slightly tattered light blue vest is a nice accent and a welcome change from the usual pirate ware that you see on these figures. His yellow sailor hat is nice but does make him look a little silly when you post him next to the more rough and tumble figures in the series. He's a pretty straightforward type of figure with a minimal amount of detail on his striped shirt and dark pants.
Hard Hittin' Harry
The second of the red heads in the set, this is one of the more interesting figures in the pirate series. You wouldn't think that the combination of red and green would work for a pirate but on this guy it looks pretty snappy. His shirt has a stenciled lace up front and belt and the big black glossy boots really help pull the whole thing together. The coolest thing about him is the black bandana piece that slips on to his head. As I mentioned, all the accessories can be used on other Playmobil figures so if you want some variety you can pick up multiple of this set and have some real fun creating unique figures.
Things To Know
• The set comes with two pistols and one medium sized sword. These can be snapped into the figures hands or used in armories but the swords to tend to make the figures a little unstable. You can solve this by adding a small piece of poster putty to the bottom of their feet or shoes and pressing them into position.
• This set sets for $6.99 at the Playmobil site but you can find it for about a dollar less at Target. For the money, this set is definitely worth it to increase the size of your pirate crew or add a little color and zip to your collection.
The Bottom Line
This is one of the nicer collections in the Pirate series; it's the cheapest way to add three figures to your scene without having to invest in the larger sets. The fact that you get two pistols and a sword with it makes it even more appealing since these weapons can be used in other scenes and with other sets. The only small pieces in this set are the wrist cuffs on Peg Leg Pete and the wings of the parrot. If you are going to be giving this set to a smaller child, these are pieces that you will want to keep an eye on or remove all together. If your child likes the Pirate series you might want to consider picking up the Pirate Ship [3286, $84.99] or the Pirate Lagoon [3285, $84.99]. Both of these are larger sets that come with some great accessories, weapons and unique pieces!
