mrb129's Full Review: Pocket Bowling for Game Boy Color
I received this game for my birthday. I thought it would be really cool to learn how to bowl on a GameBoy, but it is much easier said than done on the Pocket Bowling game.
When you are actually bowling on this game, there are 2 things you have to choose--the speed of the ball and the angle at which the ball will be thrown. Those are chosen not by entering a number or something....no, it is never that easy on Pocket Bowling. By determining how well you 'e-bowl' with an accuracy test, you select your angle pretty inadvertently using the test. Therefore, you end up with a sucky bowl, a sucky round, and a sucky game. And that, my friend, totally sucks.
Let's get this straight. If you are doing bad, and your oppponent is an incredibly phenomenal bowler, the chances of your winning are pretty slim. Do you agree? I hope so. Just a warning, if you buy this game, your initials will probably never be on the HIGH SCORE list. Actually, I don't even know if there is a high score list-I mean, I'm yet to see it! Yes, the creators of Pocket Bowling programmed the computer to be an awesome bowler. Not only does this create a lack of variety in the game (lose...lose...lose...lose...) but it would be discouraging to a young Pocket Bowler to lose every time. That sort of almost teaches him that he will lose every time in life.
But as far as the actual game goes, well, not much 'goes' at all. You just hit the same button over and over. I could probably get a better score than ever before if I just sat on the GameBoy and shook my butt to smash the different keys. There is only 1 different game choice--another lack of variety.
So, by now I assume that you have gotten the gist of my Epinion and its purpose (fyi it is to not buy this game). But now, I know what you're thinking...if I don't buy this, what should I buy? Well, I recommend SuperMario, BomberMan, and Rugrats. Those games are full of do-it-yourself action and variability...and those are things I look for games to actually possess. Thank you and happy Epinioning!
