gdwtch22's Full Review: Pokemon Silver for Game Boy Color
My son has had the game Pokemon Stadium for awhile now, and I noticed one day that you can't use all the features of the game without a game boy version of pokemon. I found a really good buy (at costco) on a gameboy color that came with the pokemon silver game and a guide book. I bought it thinking now he can finally use all the features of his Pokemon Stadium. He played the gameboy for awhile and then we tried to use it with his Pokemon Stadium game. It wouldn't work?? Then I noticed in little print on the silver package, "Not compatible with Pokemon Stadium". I was really upset. Why doesn't it work with Pokemon Stadium. My son was really upset, and obviously so was I. I really didn't understand why some of them are compatible and others aren't, and then it occurred to me. If this one doesn't work, then I have to buy another one. What a rip off!! After all this I was pretty discouraged, but my son enjoys the game by itself.
The first time you turn the game on it asks you for the time of day, which my son thinks is cool. There are a few things on the game that need the time of day, such as contests, and during the daylight hours the game is lighted, and during night it is darker. It also asks for what day it is. This is important because you can take a berry off a tree one day, and it will be back there the next day. I like the fact that the trainer has a mother, who will save money for him/her. There are casinos in the game though, and I don't think gambling is such a great thing to teach kids. It is a little bit confusing for my six year old, it is a pretty complex game, and he often needs assistance reading what is being said. There are lots of different things that the trainer has to accumulate during the game, and if you don't get all the items you can't really advance in the game. You can trade pokemon and items with other people who have the game, and the pokemon are pretty cute. Overall, my feelings are mixed. I'm glad my son enjoys the game, but I really can't get over the fact that it doesn't work with Pokemon Stadium.
