Pros: Compact, lightweight, comfortable to wear, low price
Cons: Light brightness/battery time
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a high-quality, durable, comfortable, and inexpensive headlamp, this is the one for you. It will go the distance.
I bought this headlamp as a replacement to my Princeton Tec Predator model, which I recently misplaced. I went with the Quest because of its inexpensive pricing (I paid $17.99 on 11/02/01). The main difference I noticed between the Quest and the Predator is that the Predator is camouflage and costs just a bit more.
The fixed-focus light beam is nice and bright on fresh batteries. Like any light bulb (excluding L.E.D.s) however, the brightness diminishes as battery life decreases. The light becomes more dim, and yellow. Nonetheless, I still get about 7 hours of light out of each set of batteries (2 AA Alkaline - perhaps you may get more out of AA lithium).
To overcome brightness issues, I replaced the standard light bulb with a Halogen bulb. This is definitely whiter/brighter, but it cuts battery life in half. Personally, I purchased the Halogen bulb from a local Radio Shack store for around $5.00. If you purchase Princeton Tec's Halogen bulb (which appears to be identical to the Radio Shack bulb except for packaging), expect to pay around $14.99 (11/02/01) for the bulb.
The light is easy to turn on & off with the rubber ring light housing [you don't have to fumble around looking for a switch]. The Quest has an easily-adjustable elastic headstrap, and the back of the lamp housing has thick-rubber padding; making this headlamp very comfortable and easy to wear.
My experience with Princeton Tec headlamps has been great. As mentioned, this is the second Princeton Tec headlamp I've owned and I've never had a problem with either of them. My headlamp has been dropped on rocks and in water, stepped on, and exposed to below-freezing temperatures. It still performs like new.
