July 25, 2002 - Driver Update (Reply to this comment)
by ajritz
This is the final time I'll be updating this issue. Once again, the Lyrazone website claims the have "New! Updated K@zoo Windows XP USB drivers and MusicMatch Jukebox plug-in with Windows XP support". Unfortunately, the link with that title still only connects to a .pdf file explaining where to download an updated MusicMatch plug-in. The crowning glory is that the first paragraph of the MusicMatch instructions that before downloading the plug-in, "the USB drivers for the RCA portable player [must] have been properly installed".
Hello! That's been the problem since this product was released -- NO WIN XP USB Drivers!! RCA clearly doesn't get it, and it's website continues to be seriously misleading, if no fraudulent in its misrepresentation.

Update - March 11, 2002 - Still no Kazoo USB drivers for XP (Reply to this comment)
by ajritz
I felt that this review was so negative that it was only right for me to follow up on this driver issue. According to RCA's "Lyrazone" website, there are STILL no Kazoo USB drivers for Windows XP. The link on the website for updated Kazoo files for Windows XP is only to a .pdf file with instructions for downloading an updated MusicMatch plug-in. However, the file also states that in order for the plug-in to work, your USB drivers must already be properly installed. It's the lack of proper USB drivers that has been the problem all along, so this new plug-in won't be of much help to most who have the Kazoo/WinXP compatibility problem. Most significantly, the RCA website continues to mislead users into believing that updated USB drivers for WinXP are available when they are, in fact, not.

Re: Window's XP Driver for RCA Kazoo - Not really (Reply to this comment)
by ajritz
I checked the link you posted. Though RCA CLAIMS to be providing WinXP drivers, if you follow the link you find out that's not really the case. RCA sends the user to MusicMatch for an update to the MusicMatch software. However, the instructions state that before you download the MusicMatch update you must make sure that "the usb drivers for the RCA portable are properly installed." BUT THERE ARE NO USB DRIVERS AVAILABLE FOR THE KAZOO PLAYER THAT WORK UNDER WIN XP!!!
The Lyrazone website remains poorly organized and continues to provide misleading information about the availability of Win XP support for the kazoo.
I highly recommend you spend the few extra bucks on the Intel Personal Audio Player (cheaper than the Pocket Concert and only missing the voice recording and FM-tuner capabilities), which we found to be a solid alternative.

Window's XP Driver for RCA Kazoo (Reply to this comment)
by ladisirt
At RCA's customer service page there is a link for XP support for the RCA Kazoo. I'm not sure if it'll work, I'm merely interested in buying a Kazoo. If I can help a few people get there players working and find out if the Kazoo is worth my money, why not kill two birds with one stone. Here's the link. http://www.rca.com/customerservice
Good Luck,
Bob

No XP drivers (Reply to this comment)
by mcmorrow
I got one of these for Xmas and was eagerly looking forward to using it. I new that the booklet didn't state " for use with Windows XP " but I thought it might work anyway. I'd just recently bought a webcam that worked with XP just fine even though it was rated for it. Well, if Santa can find the receipt I'm taking this back. I've contacted RCA/Thompson and have yet to hear from them but I'm not optimistic after reading the post above. Bottom line: if you're running XP, stay away from this mp3 player. Which is sad because it really is a small, lightweight unit, and mine had 64MB of internal memory---exactly what I was looking for. Bad planning on RCAs part. Since when does an mp3 player become obsolete after ONE OS change???

Finally (Reply to this comment)
by pat-n-lin
I have been fighting getting my Kazoo to work with windows xp for a week now. No response from rca. I came across your review during a drivers search. I paid 149.95 plus tax for this little guy when it first hit the stores a few months back. I am soooo angry at rca/thompson I could bite nails. Thank you for posting your comments. At least I can use windows ME (I am stuck with on my laptop due to microsoft)to load tunes on it. Thanks
