coloradocatz's Full Review: Rachael Ray Nutrish with Real Beef Dry Dog Food (1...
After purchasing a Boston Terrier, and then a few months later a Basenji mix doggy, I spent a lot of time researching dog foods. When I found Rachael Ray's Nutrish dog food, I counted myself lucky. I do not own show dogs and my dogs are treated as family members.
Now, I will tell you that I read bad reviews on this food - from pedigreed dog owners, breeders, and strong opinioned dog owners. But then I also read about the ingredents and talked with my Vetrinarian. (A note here: my Vet lived in Alaska for 10 years and was one of several Vet's to care for the Iditarod Sled Dogs.)
The bad reviews said a lot of things about this food. And I quote one "agree it is a crappy food. It is also available at a grocery store, which should tell you it has the left over human ingredients in it, not the real stuff". I strongly disagree! I have found that Nutrish is a good dog food. Sometimes, owners of dogs get really annoying with their convictions. And if you are wanting to "show" your dog, these things most likely should be taken into consideration.
I have read the ingredients of Rachael Ray's Nutrish and find that there is nothing objectionable with them. The first ingredients listed are Beef in the Beef formula, and Chicken in the Chicken formula. The ingredients do list SOME corn and soy. Many dog owners feel that both of these items are bad for dogs-and dogs with allergies may have problems with this food. I believe that it is based on what is good or bad for YOUR dog. And that is with any dog food.
I owned a terrier mix mutt for nearly 19 years - that said, he had no physical ailments to speak of, other than arthritis from being hit by a car when he was a puppy (before we acquired him) and cataracts. He was fed Purina and then Nutrish. 19 years for a mutt is a nice, long, life. I also had a lab/springer spaniel mix who lived 11 healthy years, who had to be put down after ingesting blanket fuzz when his "boy" went off to college. (I believe it was a mourning related death) Again, he was fed Purina and then Nutrish. I don't believe that either dog would have benefited from being fed raw meat or designer dog foods.
My new doggies have been fed Nutrish almost solely (after Purina puppy food). I have to admit that after reading all the bad reviews on this dog food, I panicked! I asked my Vet about this food specifically. We talked at length. She felt that for a family pet that this food is well above average. Not at the top of the list, but well ABOVE Average. Which in my book is pretty good. She said that concerns about the Menadione (a chemical that is listed in the ingredients) CAN be an issue IF the dog has been diagnosed with a liver/kidney problem. If the dog has a healthy liver/kidney, then the amount of the Menadione is so low as to not be an issue. (Kind of like our Flouoride added to our water-safe in very, very low doses-NOT safe in high doses.)
My dogs have no health issues and I expect them to live as long, or longer, than my other dogs did. That said I can only say that many of the nay-sayers about Nutrish are people who feed their dogs "raw" meat (something I consider barbaric) or very high protein formulas. I did try a high protein "designer" dog food, and it made my dog very, very ill - I thought he was dying. My Vet told me that many dogs cannot tolerate a high protein diet. And I certainly have to agree with her observation.
So, I believe-with conviction, that Rachael Ray Nutrish Beef Dry Dog Food is a very good dog food. My dogs both have very healthy looking coats, minor shedding (both are primarily house dogs), and seem to have no ailments of any sort. I think that the best thing to do for your dog is to research foods, talk to your Vet, and then try different foods to see which one your dog can tolerate without any problems. I recommend Rachael Ray Nutrish with Real Beef Dry Dog Food for any non-show dog. I recommend it for your family pet. I believe that your pet will show signs of good health with Rachael Ray Nutrish dry dog food. Do I believe that it is the BEST dog food that you can buy? No Do I believe that it is a very good dog food and will nourish your dog? Yes
In choosing your dog food, you must take into consideration your dog. If your dog has health issues, talk to your Vet and find out what he/she thinks will be the best food for your dog. As for me and my dogs, we like Racheal Ray's Nutrish with Real Beef Dry Dog Food and will stick with it. I've tried the other formula of Rachael Ray's Nutrish and have had no problems with it either.
