jurgrace's Full Review: Raid, 4 Pack, Double Control Ant Bait, Advanced An...
In the past, whenever ants decided to camp out in our kitchen, we have found massive success with Terro Liquid Ant Baits. Unfortunately, the ant family that decided my casa was su casa this summer doesn't have a problem with Terro. After I got increasingly tired of sweeping and dumping the ants multiple times a day, I decided to try Raid Double Control Ant Baits. While they appeared to work while we were out of town, I'm not entirely sure they are effective.
The Raid Double Control Ant Bait is basically a hexagon-shaped black plastic hut for ants. Each bait is very light, coming in at under a half ounce in weight.
According to the packaging, it contains two types of baits inside the hut, to appeal to both grease- and sweet-loving ants. Supposedly, this "Advanced Ant Defense System kills the Queen & the Colony, to give consumers relief from a variety of household problems including Pharoah, Argentine, Cornfield, & Carpenters Ants."
Raid instructs users to place these baits in corners or along walls, near the path of the ants. In a true manner of genius corporate greed, they instruct you to use all four baits from the package at a time (at a cost of $9.99 in our area), and get extra baits for a "heavy infestation." Before getting into our results, I would like to point out that for most homes, any infestation is basically considered a "heavy" infestation, so it's almost like Raid is trying to scare purchasers into getting that extra box...
...that doesn't seem to do much. While our ants weren't digging on the Terro, we were definitely seeing fewer of them before we left on our big road trip this summer, so I only placed four Raid Double Control Ant Baits in our kitchen and breakfast nook before we hit the road. I also cleaned the floor before we left, so there was nothing yummy out on the floor to attract the ants. When we returned home a week later, there were no ants on the ground. Hallelujah! These baits must work, I thought, because when we left for a weekend a couple weeks earlier, the Terro did not stop the ants from getting comfortable in our kitchen while we were out.
Soon enough, thanks to my toddler son, I got a further chance to test the Double Control Ant Baits. My son is very talented at dropping little chunks of rice under tables and chairs where I don't immediately notice them before going up to bed for the night. Nearly every morning for a month, I came downstairs to more ants. Yes, there were not quite as many as there were at the very beginning of our infestation, but there were easily as many as there were before we tried the Raid Double Control Ant Baits.
I can't say with any certainty that these ant baits work, because the only time my home was free of ants was when there was no one there to leave food on the ground. I can say, though, that they had very little, if any, effect on whatever species of ants we had this summer. Since Terro usually works well for us on "other" ant species, I would be more inclined to give that another try the next time I have an infestation than Raid Double Control Ant Baits. Terro is a lot cheaper, and at least I know that it has worked.
