For about a hundred dollars you can buy what will probably be the hottest toy this Christmas season--for kids and adults! The Razor Scooter seems to have enthusiasts in all age ranges. Living near a college campus, I see lots of the kids using them on and off campus to get from place to place. I also see children (who I thought these were designed to attract) using them for just plain fun.
The scooters have a very simple construction. Basically they consist of a polished metal platform that sits atop two metal wheels attached to a metal post with handlebars. There are other features such as rear wheel brakes but this is basically a combination skateboard-bicycle. Pretty simple idea, yet these scooters are more sturdy than they look. They can hold an adult weighing over 200 pounds with no problem. Considering how popular they are with adults, maybe the manufacturer's did expect them to catch on with the "older set". Razors come in a wide variety of colors on the platform and wheels. They are very convenient to store since they are collapsible and can be put into a carrying case (usually bought separately) or held by a carrying strap.
At first, I wondered if these toys were really safe for kids but I have found that, although lightweight, they are sturdy and durable. They are safer than plain skateboards because of the handlebars and brake. Of course, a child should still wear safety gear--helmet and kneepads--whenever riding, just as with a bicycle.
The specifications on the Razor Scooter I looked at said it was a suitable toy for children as young as six years old although I believe that even younger children would be safe using one of these if supervised.
So, get ready for the mad rush (and probably higher prices!) this year when Razor Scooters start to sell out. And, while you're getting one for that kid in your life, you might consider buying one for yourself!
