crystalattice's Full Review: Remington SCC100R Hair Trimmer
I'm in the military so I have to get a haircut once to twice a month. Even using the military barbershops, this can add up to more than $200 a year, just in hair cuts.
I've had my wife cut my hair in the past but she was never comfortable doing it. Just about every other time cutting my hair, she would screw up somehow and I would either have to get it fixed or just deal with it. So, for the last few years I've just been paying for a "pro" to do it.
But I have a problem paying $10+ for someone to just run a set of clippers over my head. So I looked around for another home cutting kit but found this.
The Remington Hair Trimmer is ideal for people who don't need or want a styled cut; just something quick and easy. It's hand-held in one hand and is cordless when in use. The cutting blade and guard are contoured to fit your head, making crew cuts easy. It also comes with a built-in close trimmer for use around your ears and sideburns.
Five lengths are available: 1, 1 1/2, 2, 3, and 4. Hence, you don't have to have all of your hair short. It also makes it easier to fade in the sides; just start at a longer length then slowly shorten it as you move down the sides of your head.
There is also a "bare cut" guard, which allows you to nearly shave your head bald. However, you actually end up with something closer to a military boot camp buzz. I only recommend using this guard if you like your hair extremely short on the sides. However, you must be careful with it if you plan on keeping a reasonable amount of hair on your head. Fading in the sides and back are very difficult with this setting.
Because of the design of the trimmer, it's reasonably easy for a single person to use it. Obviously you can't see the back of your head unless you have two mirrors, so the one-handed operation is vital. However, I noticed that, when cutting the back of my head, the hand with the trimmer always seemed to get in the viewing angle of my second mirror. This can lead to unpleasant results, sort of like a "skunk line" if your aren't careful. Make sure you have someone check your work before you head out, if possible.
Obviously, you'll get better with practice. The first time I used it, I tried using the "bare cut" guard to trim the sides and back down. However, I wasn't able to fade in the rest of my hair and so I had a visible line going around my head. Needless to say, it was commented on my several people.
The best thing to do is just start at a higher setting and bump it down a notch as you cut until you get the length you want. That way, you should avoid having visible lines on your head. Plus, try cutting it before the weekend so you have a little time to grow it out in case you cut it too short.
Overall, if you get your hair cut a lot and want to save some money, the Remington Hair Trimmer is a good buy. I got mine for less than $25; after 3 uses, it pays for itself. Every little bit of money you save helps, especially in this economy. A small bottle of mineral oil and a brush are included, so maintenance is easy.
