| kriscy's Full Review: iRobot Roomba 3000 Robotic Vacuum |
As I sit here with my morning cup of coffee, my laptop on my lap and puppy by my side, I am listening to the gentle hum of Roomba glide across my living room. Actually it sounds more like one of those Barbie Jeeps kids drive outside, but I can still hear the TV and talk on the phone.
Best features: great on dust and pet hair, runs by itself, fairly quiet, cleans well, pretty cool gadget
Roomba is and does exactly as it is advertised. It is a good sweeper, not really a 'vacuum' (it doesn't really have any sucking power), but it does a really good job! It sweeps up everything from jelly beans to cheerios, dog food to leaves. Yes, we've tried it all! I purposely 'fed' my Roomba the first time we used it. It LOVES Jelly Beans, but it really hates the easter grass from the kids easter baskets. I don't blame it, Jelly beans taste so much better. It even works pretty well with "Pet Fresh" carpet deoderizer. And for getting under the dining table and beds... well let's just say it does a MUCH better job than my husband (no offense honey). Of course one of the small drawbacks is that you actually do have to pick up the toys, cords, and clothes strewn about the floor by the kids/pets/husbands... but if you don't already do that you are probably missing a lot underneath all that stuff.
You will still need to vacuum, but for everyday cleaning up after the kids and dogs, it's great! It is really good at low-pile carpets and floor surfaces, and okay with thicker carpets. It is best at picking up hair and dust. I even used Roomba after we vacuumed once and was really surprised at the amount of dust and hair it picked up after the vacuum. It does take an hour to clean the living room floor, which I could do in 15 minutes... but that's the point... I'm not doing it. Just like a dishwasher takes 40-60 minutes to wash a load of dishes that I could clean better in 15 minutes... it does a decent job and I can do something else.
I love the 'algorithimic cleaning pattern'. The way Roomba just hap-hazardly runs in circles and turns right before it gets to a piece of paper I didn't feel like picking up, it reminds me of my own cleaning patterns. I WAS wiping down the dining room table, but then saw a small pile of dirt from a tipped over potted plant (which by the way Roomba cleaned up perfectly) so I went to get the dust buster and found a grape juice spill by the refrigerator, then I went to get a paper towel to clean it up and found out there were no paper towels, so I went into the utility room to get paper towels and saw a load of wash sitting on top of the washer which I then had to put in the dryer... now what is it that I was originally doing?
All in all this product does as it says and does a good job. I don't really like only being able to do one room (or a couple of smaller rooms) before charging again for 12 hours, and I'm not much into cleaning the dust traps and roller brush after each use (I don't think I have ever cleaned my vacuum rollers), but for what it is and what it does it is great. After my mom visited and saw Roomba working, she ordered one from Amazon.com before she even left to go home! My sister also bought one, as is my neighbor. Now if it could just do stairs.
