cddull's Full Review: Al Franken - Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And...
I really didn't know much about Al Franken before I read this book. I knew he was the guy on Saturday Night Live when I was a kid who proclaimed the 80's to be the Al Franken decade, but that was about it for my background. I bought the book more as a hopeful source of venom about Rush Limbaugh who was at his peak of popularity at the time of this book and who made me cringe with each exhalation. If you have seen Rush lately the book title isn't as appropriate, but nonetheless the sentiment shouldn't change. He may no longer be fat, but be assured that his idiocy is still intact, which makes this book just as funny today.
Franken's obvious weapon is his sarcastic tone. He can take anyone and tear them to pieces with ease, He seems to save this mostly for the religious right in this book. His secret weapon is his intelligence. This is no uninformed buffoon spouting off, it is the humorously shaped musings of a genuine intellectual. I'm sure those on the right may challenge the veracity of some of his claims, but for the most part Mr. Franken is right on the money. This is evidenced when he catches politicians claiming that they are spending more than ever on social welfare until he forces them to admit they have not adjusted for inflation and are in fact spending less. This book will make you laugh but it will make you think as well. Holes are punched in many prominent figures, not just Limbaugh. You will be amazed to read about Dick Armey simply making up characters and stories in his past to make himself look charitable.
I harbor no illusions about politics. I believe one side is just as capable of doing corrupt and awful things as the other. As long as politicians must pander to get elected then that is what they will do. That is why Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot is such a joy. Mr. Franken will not be running for elected office anytime soon, so he does not have to pander. Instead he takes his sword of satire and skewers blowhards like Rush and Pat Buchanan and I for one applaud.
Move over P.J. O Rourke! From Al Franken, America s premier liberal satirist, comes a hilarious homage to the wonderful, awful, and always absurd Amer...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
