| om3ga's Full Review: Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 CD-RW Burner |
this is my review of the 12x/10x/32A. there isnt a category for this burner yet.
Installation
Since this is my first CD-RW drive I cannot compare its ease of installation to other drives but I had absolutely no problems installing it. I purchased the EIDE version and screwing the drive in the case, hooking up the IDE cable and connecting the drive to my sound card were a breeze. Windows recognized the drive perfectly and the software install was painless. Very nice job Plextor.
Software Bundle
As with most CD-RW's this came with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Pro. It also came with some imaging software and a mp3 player. The usual CDR and CDRW media were included. Nothin real special here.
Performance
I have tried different burning methods and here is how they size up:
Audio CD to Audio CD - I popped in my one of my Orbital Cds and put in the CDR that came with the burner. It took about 9 minutes for it to rip from my 8x dvd rom to the burner. Not too shabby
Drive Data to Data CD - I took 5 full albums of mp3s I had stored on my hard drive and put the burner to work. 5 minutes 27 seconds later I had a perfect copy.
Data CD to Data CD - I made a backup of my windows 98 disc and since it is only 1 track theyre is very little 'ripping' like there is on an audio cd. This one took about 6 and a half minutes.
Final Thoughts
Even though it comes with a hefty 300+ dollar price tag this is worth every penny. Special Technology prevents buffer underuns which cause problems with most IDE drives. This drive has been touted as the 'Ferrari of CDRW's' I have no doubt in my mind. Average of 6 minutes to burn a whole cd is great in my opinion. If you have been wanting a CDRW..get this one.
