darkangeln's Full Review: Lexmark Jet Z82 InkJet Printer
Before I begin, I've been staring at the picture shown with the Lexmark Color JetPrinter Z82 for a while. I have no idea why there are three printers shown, because this one doesn't look like any of those. Unless I got the model wrong, nope, it's the Lexmark Z82 all right, so I'll begin.
First of all, this is a 3-in-1 combo. It is an inkjet printer, a flatbed scanner, and a color photocopier. Now, I've seen 3-in-1 combo's before, but so none with a FLATBED scanner. And it comes with a cheap price tag of $299 CA.
Installation
Installing this machine was easy. You're provided with a user's guide, CD-ROM, and parallel cables. I just plugged in the cables, and popped in the CD-ROM and installed the drivers problem-free. It also comes with a black print cartridge. Although it comes with a parallel-port cable, it does support USB. The difference? USB sends data faster to the printer which results in faster printing. You may not notice a difference if you use this machine to print essays or assignments, but if you're printing cards or photos for example, there will be a difference.
The Printer
The printer is just like normal printers. There's nothing special to it. It prints up to 8 pages per minute black and up to 4 pages per minute in color. This is average, it could be better. You probably noticed the words "up to 8 pages...". The reason for the "up to" is because it depends on what you're printing. If you're printing a picture that has a lot of graphics, like a picture, then it will print slower than if you're just printing off an essay you've written. The resolution is 1200 x 1200 dpi for both color and black on all paper types which is pretty good. Another plus is that you can print all different types of media like photo paper, labels, envelopes, transparencies, iron-on transfer sheets, heavy card stock for greeting cards, Hagaki, legal size and European A4, A5 and B5 sizes. Paper capacity is 150, and envelope is 10.Printing photos using photo-quality were excellent. So far, no jams.
The scanner
Now, the scanner is on top of this machine. It is a flatbed scanner (as opposed to the sheetfed). Now, for the price of this machine, something has to lack and it's the scanner. The resolution is not so great. It offers 300x600 dpi resolution, 24-bit color, and CIS-based technology. Don't understand those terms? Well, the resolution 300 x 600 dpi means there are 300 by 600 dots per inch. 24-bit color means about 16.7 million shades. CIS-based technology is contact image sensor. Now you'd get bored if I explained this to you, but it's not as good as CCD(charge-coupled device) technology which is preferred. CCD just provides sharper images with clearer colors.
The photocopier
Put the printer and the scanner together and what do you get? A photocopier. Now, you COULD buy a separate printer and a scanner, but that would be a waste of money and time. Why time? Well, because this photocopier works just like the standard toner-based machines. Now, if you were to use separate printers and scanners, you would have to scan the image on to the computer, then print it out. With this machine, you just lift the lid, lay down you're object, close the lid than press black or color and the machine copies it. Also, you can reduce or enlarge you're object, and choose multiple copies. Another great thing is that you can have multiple smaller copies on a single page. The opposite would be to have you're image divided into 4, 9 or 16 sheets which results in a large poster of you're object.
Now, I've been using this printer for a while with no problems. It's easy to install and easy to use. It should be mostly used at home but don't hesitate to use it at work. It's great because it's a 3-in-1 inkjet printer, scanner and photocopier with a cheap price. Even thought the scanner isn't quite tops, I've scanned some pictures with no problems. Two thumbs-up.
