Well, I think its been awhile since I handed out an award. Last year, this little place earned the Stinky Pillow Award, but this year the Super 8 in Anchorage really out did themselves. This is easily, the worst hotel, Ive been in for years!
The worst part about this hotel stay, is the fact that a travel agent actually set us up with this hotel. Long before departing for Alaska, we visited a local travel agency and quickly found that her assistance and/or travel knowledge wasnt helpful what-so-ever, this is one of the few reservations that she made for us, that we didnt actually cancel, but we should have.
Check-In was uneventful, the hotel had our reservation and our room was ready when we arrived early in the evening. Thankfully, the area surrounding this hotel is in decent shape, but there isnt much around the hotel that is in walking distance. We ended up ordering pizza for our supper, so we didnt have to get out.
Liars
During our stay at the Super 8 Anchorage, I happened across one of their small flyers promoting the hotel. The brochure claimed the rooms were renovated. While this may be true, I bet youd find that, that renovation was years and years ago, by that standard almost all hotel rooms have been renovated. It isnt just in the rooms that things appear outdated, its the entire hotel, the elevator is old and slow, the wallpaper is dingy and drab, the hallway carpets are filthy and packed down, and so on.
The brochure also mentioned that the rooms are non-smoking, while that is a nice touch, it was painfully obvious that our room wasnt fresh
It had a foul odor the minute we walked in, rather the stench was from smoke, mold or what I dont know, but dont let the non-smoking hoopla make you think your room will be fresh.
Dirty Room
Im not going to lie, Im a stickler for clean. I dont do dirty hotel rooms, I cringe when I see dirty carpet, and sometimes the smell on a hotel pillow can nearly make me throw up. At Super 8 Anchorage, morning couldnt come fast enough.
Our room had some meager furnishings, looked reminiscent of the 70s maybe early 80s at best, which is when I estimate that their rooms may have been renovated (see Liars). The room featured a bureau with TV (very few channels) and desk piece that all fit together in a flowing manner. A small open closet was attached to the end. On the opposite side was 2 queen beds, these beds had headboards that a small table, between the beds, connected them together.
The beds arent that clean. The bedspreads are dirty, the pillows stink and to make things worse my sons feet turned black from running around in the room barefoot
Oh, did I mention the thread bare, stained towels in the bathroom?
Breakfast
Apparently, Super 8s have fancied themselves to offering free breakfast, this hotel had one, kinda. The breakfast here only came to a handful of tiny muffins, packaged oatmeal, bagels or a cold cereal. In addition to those items they offered coffee, milk and juice to drink. You can fill yourself up on the options, but I noticed that the area wasnt stocked very well and wasnt that clean either.
Amenities
Amenities are few and far between here. At the Super 8 Anchorage you will find that they offer a courtesy van to the airport/railroad station and coffee is always available in the lobby
Um, yeah, thats it
Overall
Dirty, Dirty, Dirty - Avoid at all costs!
