kelly60's Full Review: Coastal Safe Cat Adjustable Breakaway Collar
If you have read my previous cat collar reviews you know how important the safety of my cat is to me. This is why I choose safety collars for her.
There are a couple of types of safety collars available. Both are designed to allow your cat to escape if he/she gets it caught on something such as a branch or fence, or other similar object.
The two basic types of safety collars are those with an elastic piece which stretches, allowing your cat to slip his/her head free in an emergency. This is the type I have used in the past.
The second type has a clasp which is made to come apart when tugged on. This is called a breakaway collar because the clasp allows the collar to break away, freeing your cat. This is the type of collar discussed here.
Reeces recently lost her previous collar, and a friend gave me the Coastal Pet Safe Cat Breakaway Collar that she was no longer using for her cat. She told me that she had no problems with the collar, but had only replaced it because she wanted a different color after having the red one for so long. It was still in good condition after a year of use so I put it on Reeces.
The Coastal Pet Safe Cat Breakaway Collar is made of a sturdy, no-snag nylon. I had no color choice because it was given to me, but it comes in many colors and patterns, so it is easy to find one just right for your cat.
The Coastal Pet Safe Cat Breakaway Collar is adjustable from 8" to 12" long and comes with a bell attached. There are three plastic prongs that snap into the clasp, making it a breeze to fasten and unfasten.
Unfortunately Reeces' collar was a bit to easy to unfasten. She lost it on the 2nd day. Although it is possible that she could have become snagged on something that caused the safety feature to unfasten the collar, I had noticed when putting the collar on her that it came apart much easier than I felt it should.
The other collars (listed below) both remained in place for a long time. She didn't lose either of them on a regular basis, but they did come off when necessary. That wasn't the case with this one.
In comparing this collar with the other two collars she has worn, this would definitely be my last choice. Although the collar looked sturdy and had the safety clasp, it was not the right collar for Reeces because I could not rely on it to stay in place. I want it to come off in an emergency, but it should remain in place under normal circumstances.
Although these collars may be fine for some cats, I did not find them adequate for mine. It looked nice on her at first but unfortunately, a collar does no good if it doesn't stay on the cat. For this reason I would recommend only purchasing one of these if you try out the buckle for yourself first. Some may be sturdier than others, but the one we had did not hold well enough to stay on her neck for much more than a day.
