Pros: Loud fun, an unusual evening, change of pace, tasty Roumanian fare & egg creams
Cons: Not for everyone; not cheap; inconvenient location
The Bottom Line: When we want an upbeat, fun night with heavy, Roumanian dishes, this is the place to go.

| zeecee's Full Review: Sammy's Roumanian |
Sammy's is one of the last remaining places that says "lower east side", reminiscent of the days when pickles in barrels were more common and Jews were the immigrant group populating the area. It's certainly not for a quick bite, but when you're in the mood for what feels like a party as there's musical entertainment most nights with lively singing - the Horah, New York, New York, songs most everyone is familiar with. It's upbeat, festive and fun. The place is covered with photos, pennants, letters, all sorts of memorabilia, most faded with age, but it adds to the ambiance.
You sit down and one of the waiters brings over roasted peppers, pickles, old fashioned rye bread and a syphon bottle of seltzer. Then you pick from the kishka, kasha varnishkes, chicken fricasee, liver with unhatched chicken eggs (go find these elsewhere), chopped liver & eggs mixed with shmaltz (chicken fat), sausages, kreplach - an assortment of tasty, high cholesterol appetizers. We fill up on these and order one, small skirt steak (with garlic) to share for three and there's always some left over. Order carefully as they'll let you overorder. And the bill will be higher than you'd expect.
By now you're stuffed, but you'll find room for the egg creams, which you make yourself with U-bet chocolate syrup, seltzer and milk.
You'll expect to pay about $115 for three if you order as we do. It's not hard to park in the area and may be hard to find a cab, so consider how you're getting around.
