| JamesWong's Full Review: Samsung SyncMaster 755 DF 17 inch CRT Monitor |
I currently own a Samsung SyncMaster 700p Plus monitor (by far a 17-inch monitor with the sharpest text and best image quality I have ever used, see my review for it by clicking on my profile), so when I decided to get the 755DF TFT when assembling my friend's new PC, I figured I would be in for the same pleasant experience.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the case.
The Samsung 755DF is one of the more recent monitors to come along with a TFT (True Flat Tube) display. This can be a little disorienting if you see it for the first time since the majority of monitors being used today actually have a curvature. You'll swear that the display "feels" funny or seems warped. Don't fret though - after a few sessions, your eyes adjust and the TFT experience becomes pleasant.
While the True Flat display concept shines, the 755DF is a total letdown. When I fired this monitor up out of the box, I loaded up Windows and ran some general observations. First off, the text is ONLY clear around the edges (this goes for any resolution, by the way, not just 1024 x 768)! I was very disappointed. The main / central area displays blurry text. As a freelance web designer, Internet junkie AND gamer, I require sharp text and strong image quality. The 755DF fails in the crisp-text category.
Another big turn off is the monitor cable. It is hardwired right into the monitor itself, so if it breaks (say the pins get damaged), you're going to have to take the unit to a facility rather than just buy a replacement cable at your local computer store.
It might be that I experienced an isolated case with this monitor, but Samsung quality control shouldn't have let this pass into my hands. Other ePinions on this monitor seem to praise it, but let me tell you that you should avoid this monitor at all costs. While refresh rates for this monitor are a given (read: solid @ around 85Hz for most resolutions up to 1280 x 1024), everything else is just a dud. You are better off spending your money on comparable Sony or Viewsonic models.
