My first introduction to Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter was at the Pizza Plant in Buffalo during a cold winter pizza gathering with friends from the local BBS. I needed something to start off the evening and decided on the Taddy Porter as it looked interesting and I had enjoyed the Imperial Stout from Sam Smith. This beer comes in a clear bottle and the color is black to dark brown where you can get light to shine through it at the very top of the bottle. Extremely promising!
The head didn't last very long, but it too was dark brown, something that only a few stouts had shown here and there. Aroma-wise I got a bit of oakiness or wood and that was about it. And the first sip... smooth with a hint of smoke. I would almost call this a 'smoked' beer, but it doesn't have the impact of the kind like the Schleinkeirla Rauchbier or the Kaiserdom Rauchbier both from Germany. The Taddy Porter is much more reserved about the smokiness of flavor than those two dark beers, and it gives a much more complex taste from the hops and barley. Like any decent British beer, the Taddy gives a good bitter after taste that quickly mellows out.
As for foods, well they are a must with the Taddy Porter. I suppose one could sip through this beer for a half hour or so, but it really does deserve the strongest foods available. My pizza had a wonderful garlic crust, a dark red sauce, onions, mushrooms, pepperoni, italian sausage and broccoli with soy cheese on top. I've since had this beer with extra-hot chicken wings (it cuts right through Frank's Red Hot sauce), cajun foods, beer batter fish fry, buffalo meat burger (at the Brickskeller's in Washington, D.C.) and steak. Hearty foods to go with a deep, rich, complex beer.
