Re: WINESBURG, err, Clyde, OHIO (Reply to this comment)
by Jiahong, in Hotels & Travel
You can be certain that Anderson did not get a Nobel Prize, and I'm glad to hear another example of a place first puckering up at how it was portrayed, then deciding to try to capitalize on it (make lemonade, as it were, from the lemon).
Makes me wonder about "Our Town" and "Spoon River"...

WINESBURG, err, Clyde, OHIO (Reply to this comment)
by aohcapablanca
You write:
"One might wonder about a town promoting itself by recalling something and someone who was very critical of the town, but even a writer who is read with decreasing frequency can become a commodity and draw visitors."
It happens.
Sherwood Anderson, to my knowledge, never won a Nobel Prize. And his WINESBURG, OHIO won him only brickbats in his native Clyde, Ohio, when it appeared in 1919. I know Clyde well and without that novel, little Clyde would be close to infinitely less than Sauk Centre as a tourist attraction.
Thanks for your review.

The Minniemashie House...... (Reply to this comment)

The Minniemashie House is really the Palmer House! I always loved the description of Carol's first view of the hotel in Main Street. SL is still one of my favorite writers. Well done! Tom Barnes

If you have lemons, make lemonade... (Reply to this comment)

That doesn't sound much like philosophy one would expect from Sinclair Lewis, but I just learned that fog-bound Pacifica (CA) has a Fog Festival, so "a place markets whatever it can" is true.
