cmaw63's Full Review: Shakespeare Ugly Stick Combo
To fish or not to fish...that isn't even a question. I'm definitely going to fish. The real question is, what type of equipment am I going to use? Here's where my husband and I, agree, to disagree. (The rest of the time we just disagree) Anyway...I like my Zebco reels and he likes his Shakespeare Ugly Stick Combo's.
There are many Ugly Stick combo's out there. The one my husband bought, this time, is the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Steel 10 Spincast Rod & Reel.
He chose this combo because of it's price of $29.95 at Bass Pro Shop. He intended to use the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Steel 10 Spincast Rod & Reel for a short time and then as a back up rod and reel. He was waiting for his good reel to be repaired.
In an effort to convert me to his belief that the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Combo was better than my choice of equipment, he was going to "allow" me to use it on one of our fishing excursions. When I declined the offer he kept tapping me in the back with the rod until I took it.
Ok, I admit, the two piece, 6 foot, medium action Ugly Stik rod pulled in fish after fish. It helped me catch bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. It allowed me to feel the action, without worrying if it could handle the fish or not.
The synergy steel 10 spincasting reel was a lighter weight than I am used to, so just didn't feel sturdy to me. It came spooled with 75 yards of 10 lb line. While, not really put to the test on this trip, the line cast out smoothly and reeled in without twisting or tangling. The largest fish caught weighed in right under 5 pounds. The 3.2:1 gear ratio allowed for a decent retrieve, just not as quick as a higher gear ratio would have given. This reel sits on top of the rod with a thumb release to cast. I didn't like that there wasn't an anti-reverse lock or a drag dial.
The Shakespeare Ugly Stik Steel 10 Spincast Rod & Reel worked well for me and I would use it again... if my regular rod and reel were unavailable. I would suggest this as a good and cheap back up combo to have in the boat in case your primary rod and reel weren't working.
