| ejmuller's Full Review: Shun Lee Palace |
I was recently taken to Shun Lee Palace for dinner by a friend with a liberal expense account. I'm telling you - it's the only way to go. The place is beautiful to look at - there really is an etched glass dragon on the ceiling! - and much more elegant than any Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. However, the prices!! I was a little blown away when I realized that the least expensive dish on the menu was $19.
The dishes we had were very good and more imaginative than the usual Chinese fare. A dish of prawns with fruit and walnuts was very delectable and Chicken with Three Nuts was also good and a new taste treat.
I saw several tables getting the "full Monty" of the Peking Duck (although they call it Beijing Duck here) and it looked quite impressive. But I don't eat duck, so the drama was wasted on me.
Service is very attentive and unobtrusive. It was a little disconcerting to be presented with a dessert menu at a Chinese restaurant, but the lemon sponge and ice cream treat we split was a very nice way to end the meal.
My recommendation would be to go here if someone else is paying for it. If you are picking up the tab, go downtown to Chinatown and pick any place you see. The food will be great and the price will be about 1/3 or less than you would pay at Shun Lee Palace.
