Did you ever stop to think about how many millions of germs are living on your toothbrush? Your mouth is full of bacteria so why wouldn't your toothbrush be full of bacteria as well? Well, I've got some happy news for folks with electric toothbrushes - the Sonicare UV Sanitizer! And, for you folks without an electric toothbrush, I've got advice from my dentist on how to sanitize it yourself. Read on....
The Sonicare UV Sanitizer
This new product from Sonicare is an innovative and effective way to keep your toothbrush sanitary. It works with both Sonicare and other rechargeable toothbrush heads to kill millions of bacteria in just 10 minutes.
With the toothbrush head tucked inside the sanitizer, you just press a button that turns on an ultraviolet lamp that is then reflected all around the top of the brush and right down to the bristles so that bacteria is struck directly and is rendered ineffective. It's safe, easy and solves a really disgusting problem for you. Frankly, just knowing my toothbrush is clean when I use it is a huge relief to me.
My Experience with the Sonicare UV Sanitizer
I got a free sample of this to try from Bzzagent, a site for everyday consumers who believe in honest word of mouth. As someone who rarely reads directions, I popped this out of the box and plugged it in to my bathroom wall socket before I went to the directions to see what to do with my brush head. All I had to do was to screw off the brush head and pop it into the sanitizer. There is a little magnet that holds it in place so it keeps you from putting it in backwards. I then closed the little door and hit the button and went back to reading the directions which said that it would be clean in 10 minutes. It was that easy. And, now that I'm totally creeped out about germs, I just keep my toothbrush head in there until I'm ready to use it; use it; then pop it right back in and sanitize it for the next time. It's really that easy.
Quick facts:
* It's available at most retailers including Target, Amazon.com, Drugstore.com, Walgren's, and select Costco stores with a suggested retail price of $49.99.
* It works with both Sonicare and Oral-B brush heads.
* The UV bulb lasts for approximately five years. Replacements are available through Sonicare.
* Even with the sanitizer, it's still recommended that you replace your rechargeable toothbrush head every 3 months to ensure maximum plaque removal.
* You must take the protective plastic cap off of your toothbrush head in order to use the Sanitizer.
* It takes about 10 minutes to clean your brush (or two brushes at once, if you like.) The sanitizer will automatically shut off when it it finished and a light will turn on at the top of the machine letting you know that it's ready.
* UV light is like the light from the sun. It has been used to clean surgical instruments for decades. So, this is perfectly safe.
So what do you do if you don't have the Sonicare UV Sanitizer to keep your toothbrush clean?
I asked my dentist this question just this past week. He recommends dipping it in hydrogen peroxide and then washing it off. He said you can also dip it into the type of alcohol that you drink - like brandy - each time you use it for up to a week at which time you should replace the alcohol. He also keeps his toothbrush in a cooler room that his bathroom when he's not using it to retard the growth of bacteria as there's nothing bacteria likes more than a warm environment.
