In this day and age there seems to be less and less need for a can opener. Most of the canned goods I buy come with a convenient pop-top lid. But once a week or so I still need to pull out my Swing-A-Way can opener.
The Basics
This manual can opener is about 7 long. It is made from chrome plated steel and the handles are covered with black rubber grips. The Swing-A-Way can opener has a 5 year warranty.
Using It
Im am sure most people are familiar with the use of a handheld can opener. You simply open the handles and place the cutter on the edge of the can. Closing the handles causes the cutter to pierce the edge of the can. You then turn the handle and the can opener follows the edge of the can, cutting as it goes. When you have made almost a complete revolution open the handle and lift up on the now open lid. There is also a hook on top of the can open to open bottle tops.
For cleaning Swing-A-Way suggests using either a small brush or damp cloth to remove any food that may collect in the gears and then dry. This can opener should not be immersed in water.
Our Experience
This is one of the first items we bought when moving into this house , so I have had it for over 5 years. I am very pleased with the quality of this can opener. It is very easy to use and the handle turns almost effortlessly. The handles are easy to grip but not overly soft. I had tried out an OXO can opener but I found the grips to be too large and cumbersome, even in my large hands.
I have to admit that I have never followed the manufacturers cleaning recommendations. The blade and gears come in contact with food and I want it clean. I always rinse the can opener off under running water when I am done with it. Then at least once a month I commit the most heinous of all offenses and put it in the dishwasher. I estimate this can opener has been through 100 dishwashing cycles and is no worse for wear. The gears are cutter are not chrome coated but have yet to show any signs of rust from my abusive treatment. The rubber coated handles still look brand new.
Final Thoughts
This is a great, inexpensive can opener that has outlasted its warranty despite my abuse. I have no doubt that I will get at least another 5 years out of my Swing-A-Way can opener.
