spinwilly's Full Review: Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this fine little guitar? It's not quite a 314 or 414 but it actually has some distinctive tonal advantages not found on it's fullsize counterparts. Combine a Big Baby with a full size quality acoustic in the studio or on stage and you have an awesome compliment. But even by itself, it's a beautiful little sounding piece of wood.
I've been playing for roughly 30 years and I bought the Taylor 414ce a while back to ease my transition into middle age from the world of rock, into the world of gentler acoustic music. I've been hooked on Taylor's ever since.
My daughter (who doesn't live with me and does not have access to my axes) has taken up guitar and has been playing on an old junker. So I thought I'd drop $300-$500 on something decent for her to play. I went down to the local guitar center and played all the Ibanez, Takamine, Fender, Yamaha etc. etc offerings in that price range and after a few hours, my fingers were tired and I was fairly disappointed.
I was just about to give up and resign myself to believing I could only get a crappy sounding guitar for this price when I remembered that I had read these reviews about the Big Baby a while back. I asked the sales guy if they had any and said they did, but not out on display, he had to go get one from the back. No wonder I hadn't thought of it.
So he pulled it out of the box and out of the gigbag. I played it for about 30 seconds, looked up at him and said "I'm buying this guitar... now". He said cool!
Yeah the sound is amazing. The highs are crisp and the mids are punchy. The low end is not as strong as my 414 but that's to be expected. Yet the sustain and resonance are incredible.
I've been playing the Big Baby next to my 414 on and off for the last month. Next week I visit my daughter and will give it to her for her birthday. But, I don't want to give this thing up! It sounds so good, travels nicely, makes great recordings, and is good for live performances as well.
Ironically, if I had never bought one as a gift, I'd probably never have picked one up. Now I'm kinda hooked on the little thing. I'll just by another one for myself... maybe two.
