The Bottom Line: Despite some initial problems, we would recommend this mattress. We sleep very soundly on it and it has helped my lower back pain

After sleeping on a regular foam mattress for almost 30 years, we got eventually tired of hearing the ticking rip every time we turned over. We desperately needed a new mattress, and after seeing the TV commercials for Tempurpedic, decided to treat ourselves. We purchased the mattress only and put it on our platform bed. Initially,it was a major disappointment. A slip of paper that came with the mattress mentioned a "particular smell" that would wear off within a few days. This was masterpiece of understatement. The chemical odor was incredibly strong and truly nauseating, rather like sleeping in a can of latex paint with the lid on. We abandoned our bedroom and kept the windows in it wide open. After a week of sleeping in our guest room, we gave it another try, and the smell was still noticeable if we stuck our noses in the mattress and gave a good sniff, but it was no longer a real problem. My husband slept well on the mattress from the start. I, on the other hand, have a history of severe lower back problems. The first few days of sleeping on the bed were torture. There were no pressure points, which is nice, but no support either - you just kind of sink into the bed. if you're in the habit of sleeping in a bad position, you will have a problem, at least initially, with this mattress. I woke up every morning in excruciating pain all over. Just getting out of the bed was a major struggle between me and the mattress and it almost won a few times. We discussed returning it, but inertia as usual won out, and we decided to give it more time. I'm happy to say that it was a good decision. After a couple of weeks I find that I not only sleep very soundly in this bed, but incredibly, my back pain has disappeared completely as well.
