I'm always intrigued... (Reply to this comment)

whenever I hear someone (self-)proclaimed as the "greatest rapper alive." It seems like every few years there is a new contender to the throne, only to fail to live up to expectations.
I haven't heard this album yet, so I cannot pass judgment. But all the hype has piqued my curiosity and it's on my wish list. In that sense, Wayne has succeeded. However, I'll probably approach it from a cynic's point of view thanks in part to your scathing review. Good job.

I got your number, Wayne.... I got your number.
Indeed you have dude. The review is fire: brisk, to the point, and focused. Easy to say that because I agree with a lot of what you have to say; Wayne has done zero to persuade me he is nothing more than a fad. BUT I haven't listened to this album yet - his last two were weak, so I hope III is a bit better...
Great stuff,
Paul

i recently read in an interview that "Tie My Hands" was recorded sometime around or before Carter II (i'm a little vague on the timeframe,) and Robin Thicke was originally gonna use it on an album. figured i'd mention that, kinda interesting

i know this is my zillionth comment on this, but whatever.
nice review, thought you really articulated what exactly your problems with this were well. i had a couple comments though just about some slight corrections and where you're coming from on this.
first i'd just point out that Deezle did the drums on "Let the Beat Build," not Kanye. i know 'Ye's the only credited producer but Deezle's (who i think is the album's engineer) said in an interview that they just got the sampled loop from 'Ye.
as for the Best Rapper Alive thing, obviously the guy's repeated it nonstop, and as late as Da Drought 3 (which is entertaining but he really was just f*cking around there) i'd agree with some of the criticism. however he's got a ridiculous work ethic and he's gone a long way since then on both this album, previous guest spots and lesser-known mixtape/unreleased material in proving that it's not just talk. i tend to view that type of bragging from him and Kanye as different from 50 Cent/most other Southern rappers' sh*t talking.
finally i know you said you're not an "emo rap fan" and i'm not questioning that...but the fact that you think "Dr. Carter," "Tie My Hands" and "Shoot Me Down" are the best songs here seems to me like you generally like his more serious stuff. don't get me wrong those're some of my favorites here too but i think there's room for crazy flows and lighter substance, especially considering how great he is at it. i wouldn't want a whole Wayne album of "Shoot Me Down"s.

agree with everything you said in this review. His hype is unbelievable, and it surely isn't justified. I find it funny that people will just say his flow and "corny style" (which it surely is corny and predictable) makes up for all his short-comings - which it surely doesn't. I agree that "Dr. Carter," "Shoot Me Down," and "Tie My Hands" are certified dopeness.
Another fantastic review.

And throughout that time period, he's been able to convince the general public that he was the best rapper alive, mostly by saying it over and over again
LMAO! No doubt. And I laughed my a** off, as well, when I heard that a magazine compared him to Bob Dylan. I'm not as much a Dylan fan (it's just that I'm unfamiliar with a good amount of his stuff) but I know that's ridiculous.
As for "A Milli," I know that some of the wordplay there is extremely heinous and the song overall ain't great imo, but I do think it's hilarious how he tries his best to rhyme "coppers" and "HAHAHA" and fit the latter into the rhyme scheme. And I feel you about the "oops, I mean" BS - it's wearing out it's welcome. I have to listen to "I'm Me". And yeah, I understand what you mean in the last paragraph - I agree.
One of the best reviews for this album yet. Excellent job man.
Peace
