The Baby’s Bedtime Book
By Kay Chorao
I’d first like to start by saying it is never too early to introduce books to a child.
The Baby’s Bedtime Book by Kay Chorao is a 64 page compilation of 27 nursery rhymes, poems and lullabies suitable for bedtime reading for young children.
The Baby’s Bedtime Book is filled with pictures that look sketched with colored pencils, giving a colorful, yet soft feel. These illustrations truly give off a warm cozy feeling, great for bedtime. Also, almost every page has a picture, which is a plus when reading to a young child who needs the images to stay interested.
The contents are actually borrowed from other authors and publishers. Kay Chorao and her publisher obtained permission for the reprints. Since this book offers such a variety of rhymes, poems and lullabies, I’ve listed the complete contents and a brief description of some so that you can make a better decision if you and your child would enjoy this book.

Dance, Little Baby is a silly little rhyme that my son loves to hear! The illustration shows a young mother dancing with her infant while the father looks on from the doorway smiling.
Dance, little baby, dance up high.
Never mind, baby, mother is by.
Crow and caper, caper and crow;
There, little baby, there you go
Up to the ceiling, down to the ground,
Backwards and forwards, round and round.
Dance, little baby, and mother will sing
With the merry coral, ding, ding, ding!
Tree Shadows is a short Japanese poem about the trees’ shadows when the moon comes out at night. The picture shows a little boy holding his dog’s paw, looking and pointing up to the moon.
All hushed the tress are waiting
On tiptoes for the sight
Of moonrise shedding splendor
Across the dusk of night.
Ah, now the moon is risen
And lo, without a sound
The trees all write their welcome
Far along the ground!
Night, a poem by William Blake, tells of the sun setting, stars shining, birds resting and the moon smiling on the night.
At Night, by Anne Blackwell Payne, is a cute poem that would very useful in calming a child that is afraid of the dark at bedtime. Your child can learn there is nothing to be afraid of by the illustration of a toy sheep in the corner of the room casing a shadow. You can easily explain this in terms dealing with your own child’s toys.
When I go to bed at night,
The darkness is a bear.
He crouches in the corner
Or hides behind a chair;
The one who tells me stories-
She does not know he’s there.
But when she kisses me good-night,
And darkness starts to creep
Across the floor, why, then I see
It’s just a woolly sheep
That nibbles at my rugs awhile
Before we go to sleep.
Girls and Boys, Come Out To Play tells of children coming out at night to play with their friends. I have heard this one before, but it happens to be one of my personal favorites because of the illustration. Children are dancing in the air, flying over rooftops and mixing a big bowl of pudding in the street.
My Bed Is a Boat, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is about a child’s imagination of their bed turning into a little boat.
Hush, Little Baby is a classic I’ve heard since I was little. This version is different than the one I’ve heard though. Instead of Hush, little baby, don’t say a word, Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird it uses PAPA!!! I think it’s a wonderful change since most rhymes and songs usually include the mother. Also, nicely illustrated with Papa holding his child, smiling.
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by Jane Taylor is another classic. This shows 5 verses to the song instead of the usual 1 we are accustom to now.
I See the Moon is one of my favorites because it’s simple for me to remember, as well as simple for a child to learn. An adorable child sits on their bed, looking out at the moon with two kittens playing on the bed.
I see the moon,
And the moon sees me;
God bless the moon,
And God bless me.
All the Pretty Horses is simply a beautiful lullaby. (Especially if you’ve ever heard Kenny Loggins sing it!)
How They Sleep tells how farm animals sleep at night while the babies are in their beds fast asleep.
The Land of Nod, a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, is about a child dreaming. Calling it the Land of Nod, the child reminisces about the dreams that are gone now.
Safe in Bed is another favorite of mine. Beautifully illustrated, 4 angels are at each post of the bed with a child safely asleep in the middle.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on!
Four corners to my bed,
Five angels there lie spread:
Two at my head,
Two at my feet,
One at my heart, my soul to keep.
Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is a different version than I know.
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray thee, Lord, my soul to keep;
Thy love go with me all the night
And wake me with the morning light.
Day Is Done
Day is done,
Gone the sun-
From the earth,
From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well,
Safely rest.
God is nigh.
Gently ending the book.
And the rest include:
Stars
Rock-a-bye, Baby
Minnie and Winnie by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
A Chill by Christina Rossetti
Good Night by Jane Taylor
Gaelic Lullaby
Lullaby and Good Night is from German descent.
Cradle-Song is from The Sceptred Flute by Sarojini Naidu.
The White Seal’s Lullaby is from the story The White Seal by Rudyard Kipling.
Sleep, Baby, Sleep!
Sweet and Low
All Through the Night by Sir Harold Boulton

Back in February, Epinions Member char.mike wrote an Epinion on this book, The Baby's Bedtime Book. Because of that Epinion, I purchased the book for my son this past month. My son just LOVES his bedtime stories. I read to him each night and this book was a nice addition to his small collection. Char.Mike’s review on this book can be found at: http://khahn86351.epinions.com/content_10707373700/tk_~CB008.1.1
If it wasn’t for her review, I may not have bought this wonderful book for my son. When Epinions member KMINER invited some members to write on a product that was purchased or used because of what another Epinions member had written about, I immediately though of this book. You can check out the other participant's on Kimm's review:
