RonFranscell's Full Review: Skip Press - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenw...
Hollywood has this odd reputation for skating on the edge of America's artistic consciousness, pushing the limits, using the f-word when a d-word would be better. But when it comes down to it, Hollywood is just as hide-bound with rules, just as eager to pigeonhole, and nearly unwilling to consider any deviations ... on paper, that is. So you'd better know the rules and conventions ... or die hard.
As a published novelist just breaking into the film business (as a screenwriter), I needed some good, practical advice about writing scripts. This book would be an excellent and useful addition to any would-be screenwriter's library. It offers excellent advice on how NOT to appear like an amateur, which is death long before you ever reach the box-office.
Author Skip Press tells all without being preachy, arrogant or snooty. He knows he's writing for beginners, and you'll feel comfortable with his style and wit.
You'll find advice on plotting, pacing, dialogue, money, script length, queries ... everything important to the business. Plus, you'll get advice on the little things, too: How many brads must you use in your snazzy new script? What KIND of brads must you use? Use and ampersand (&) or an "and" in the byline?
All is handily packaged for use. The index is a little difficult to negotiate at first, but you'll soon get the hang of it.
I highly recommend this book. It shouldn't be the ONLY screenwriting manual you get, but if you've been wondering how you can write produceable scripts,, this is a great start!
