| kjscrafts's Full Review: Michael Lawson - The Inside Ring |
This is one of the best fiction books I have read in a long time. It is a little slow in the beginning, but it lays down enough suspense to want you to keep reading. By the time I was a third of the way through the book I found it hard to put down and actually read the last one third in one sitting, which it the kind of thing I rarely do, as most of my reading is just short periods of time between doing other things or traveling on the Metro. The main plot of this book is about Joe DeMarco, a lawyer who does special jobs for the fictional Speaker of the House (named Mahoney), investigating an assassination attempt on the U.S. President. The President had been shot at and the author (the President's best friend, Philip Montgomery) he was with was killed as well as one of the Secret Agents protecting the President. The President only ended up with a minor injury from a bullet in his arm. The FBI believe the case is solved and the secretary of Homeland Security wants some proof that to his claim that someone in the Secret Service's Inside Ring (the men that directly protect the President) was involved in the assassination attempt. That is where DeMarco comes in as an investigator looking in on Billy Mattis, the likely Inside Ring co-conspirator. DeMarco is used to small easy tasks such as involving getting lobbyists to stop bothering congressmen. As he gets deeper and deeper into the investigation he gets in lots of sticky situations and it ends up with some interesting plot twists about who was involved and how they were connected. The biggest plot twist comes at the end that brings connects those involved to a person in a high level position and eventually the truth unraveled about the assassination remains a government secret. This book is well-written book filled with thrill, suspense, and mysteries. The best thing is that all the different things are all wrapped up nicely and brought together at the end.
