My favorite place to eat is anywhere with good food and drink with an outside view of the waterfront. The Landings Restaurant had everything I was looking for and we found the place unexpectedly...after given a suggestion by an employee of a nearby museum.
A Fine Recommendation
We happened to be in Rockland to visit the Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center. We had been driving for about five or six hours and after spending some hours at the museum, we were ready to eat. It was one of the gals in the museum that gave me the name after I requested a place that may have the elements I earlier described. It was just a minute or two car ride and perhaps a five minute walk from the museum. It offered plenty of parking.
The two story restaurant had a nautical feel inside but it was the seating outside, overlooking a commercial dock area and a small tranquil park, that left a fine memory.
We were seated on the lower deck nearest the waterfront. The atmosphere was relaxed and the waitstaff friendly. Apparently they must do catering because I couldn't help but notice two large white tents on the property. I never asked how they were used.
The menu was mostly local fish and lobster of course. Prices were quite reasonable between $12-$25 for a complete meal. Steaks and other meats were available too. I had the dinner of scallops. Scallops can sometimes be undercooked and mushy or if overly done, rubbery. These were absolutely perfect and the lightly seasoning coating was delicious.
My wife was equally happy with her selection though for the life of me I cannot recall what she had that day. She noted that this was one of the best casual outside restaurants in Maine she had ever been to. That's quite remarkable in that we have dined inside and outside of many a Maine restaurant in the past 36 years.
Two More Reasons
Being this was our first stop in Maine on our way up to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, it was also my first opportunity to have some locally brewed beers. The Landings offered a few on tap and a few others in bottles. Though their choices were far from extensive, what they suited me well.
After dinner while the gals were still talking I took a short walk to the small picturesque park next door. It's perfect way to walk off a few of the extra calories absorbed in the restaurant.
A Pleasant Encounter
When I returned from the short walk to the park to rejoin my family a gentleman at a table nearby asked where we were from, her overheard some of our conversation. We chatted a bit and then I mentioned we were looking for an inexpensive place to stay overnight. He made a suggestion or two but at the late time on a Friday night wasn't sure what still may have room for us. He then picked up his phone and made a few calls. I then found out that i was talking with a Mr. Joe Catelano who was very involved in his town's activities. He also invited us to the next weekends Down East Pirates Day that unfortunately we missed.
Last Thoughts
I liked the laid back friendly atmosphere of the restaurant. Mr. Catelano noted it's one of the best, if not the best in town. More important to me was the fact that my wife claimed it to be excellent. For me a cold micro brew and good portion of well presented and prepared local fish with an outstanding view of the waterfront is enough. This restaurant had all I was looking for.
MAINE,wonderful coastal towns and so much more.
Bar Harbor What a great seaside town!!
Acadia National Park My favorite place in the world
My thoughts of Rockport, the Farnsworth Museum & Wyeth Center and the Oakland Seashore Motel & Cabins in nearby Glen Cove, Maine will soon be told in separate reviews.
