Pros: High quality, drama, gore and acting.
Cons: None....
The Bottom Line: Simply a rocking horror film that actually evokes some emotion from the audience unlike the recent remake of Friday the 13th.

I've read that Wes Craven's movie was already a loose remake of an older movie, called Jungfrukällan, so to call this movie a remake of a remake is pretty justified but it completely stands alone in quality because it's actually better than Wes Craven's.
My opinion why it's better is not only the glossy new look, which doesn't always help movies.... see the new Friday teh 13th and you'll know what I'm talking about, a far worse film than the original, but it carries alone untold pain which is carried by the family from the loss of the main characters (Mari) brother. This in turn gives us a look into the silenced threshold of the family's prior anguish. Never spoken about directly, as if too painful to talk about, Mari hold onto his memory by wearing an engraved pendant necklace. This in turn later shows up as the plot device to turn the stranded travellers into cold blooded killers. The family's reaction is everything it should. They don't seek a long drawn out revenge as in Craven's....with traps and such or biting off an appendage (you know what I'm talking about) of a horny lunatic, but a quick, frantic flurry of violence. This works well because the daughter doesn't die as in the Craven version. This adds that much more tension to the film. It also allows us to feel even more justification for the vengeance because they still have something to fight for. If she'd have died, they simply could have left in the boat. It would be the more honest approach to reality, however the daughter is there, weak and frailed from her wounds. She needs to be taken care of and her family is her last hope.
I don't understand the negative reviwes who say this movie is just too disgusting. Saw movies are worse..... and are generally liked because of the twists and plot depth however it lacks the reality based emotions of Mari's parents.
Monica Potter plays an emotionally charged mother in this film and plays it with ferocity. Tony Goldwyn plays the father, and who luckily happens to be a doctor. He's gonna need the skills. It also sets up why they have another house in a remote location. They obviously have enough money to have more than 1 house.
The bad guys were bad.... everything you could wish for when seeking vengeance. If the bad guy roles weren't convincing the movie cannot work, so all those who think the movie was overly gruesome or realitic, shouldn't be watching these kinds of films anyhow. Go see Wall-E or something.
