epiph0ny's Full Review: Alice Sebold - The Lovely Bones
I had to force myself to put this book down and go to sleep. It has a desperatness to it as Susie, the 14y/o main charecter watches her family unravel after her rape and murder. I was captivated right along with Susie trying to "will" her family into their life thereafter.
Susie is murdered. She tells you about how her life was..and then how it happened, and all in past tense as it is told from Heaven--which is not what she had expected it to be. You feel like you are in her young, innocent mind, as she diverts her attention to things going on in her head during her rape and murder. You feel almost violated yourself because the description and feeling is so real.
She sees her family, her neighbors, her friends, and even her killer, and gains an insight into all of their thoughts from Heaven. She (sadly) watches them grow and change without her and ends up growing up herself. She actually ends up thinking differantly as the story progresses, into more adult thinking- which is excellent work by Sebold, I might add.
This is a definate must read-- there is a reason there is so much "hype" surrounding this book, and it is becuase it is so, so good. Even people who don't often read will love this book and find themselves addicted to it, as I did.
