I bought "The Parents Answer Book..from Birth Through Age Five," authored by the editors of Parents Magazine, shortly before the birth of my son, about 2 1/2 years ago. I use it still and will, I am sure, with my next child. Its title states that it covers questions from birth to age five. It covers everything from how to hold your newborn and breast/bottle feeding, to chicken pox and bug bites.
The "Symptoms and Treatments for Childhood Illnesses " chapter is the one that I have visited the most often. Not that my son has been sick much at all, but this chapter does so much to ease your worries! It discusses allergies, colds, fever, ringworm, stomach aches, vomiting, and so much more. It has helped me a few times when I wasn't sure if I should call the Pediatrician about a concern or not.
Family subjects such as step families, divorced parents, and special needs children are also addressed. Basic first aid is included. Want to know how to child-proof your home for the new baby? It's in there! Or how about your child's emotional development, setting limits, or planning a safe trip? This book covers it all.
Often times, I have picked up the book and as I was thumbing through it, found helpful advice that I would have never imagined would have been included. It raises issues that I would never have thought about had I not read on the subject. One such example is carpet cleaner use. I steam my carpets fairly often to make sure that my home is as dust and allergen free as possible for my asthmatic stepson. This book suggests that there is ongoing research into whether or not the cleaning solutions are harmful to young children. The Parents Answer Book also provides several addresses and phone numbers to organizations that would be of use to the reader.
I would recommend this book to any parent or parent-to-be. It would make a good gift for an expectant parent, as well. I have found it to be very helpful, and feel that it is money well spent.
