booklover24's Full Review: Tim Winton - The Riders
Tim Winton's voice is so purely Australian and so unlike most American writers that some readers might be put off. I chose this book for our book discussion group and instead of loving it as I did, all but one hated it and thought the main character to be completely unbelievable. They found his pursuit of his wife totally unsympathetic and even saw him as a child abuser for dragging his daughter around and subjecting her to several risky situations such as the dogbite and leaving her alone in Amsterdam.
Their opinions aside, I found his to be a unique voice and the protagonist a character whose passion in seeking his cold wife made him more appealing than foolish.
Winton's other book Cloudstreet reflects his invention of characters who live by their emotions. His characters are usually working class people who have had some bad breaks in their lives. He is a refreshingly different author.
