mshepherd6485's Full Review: Douglas Adams - The Salmon of Doubt: Special Editi...
In fall 2001, author Douglas Adams, writer of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, died. Peter Guzzardi, his editor, and others took on the task of making a compilation of the man's works. They collected over 2700 works. Some were just letters, others were manuscripts, and other miscellaneous writing. One of these items was a manuscript for his new book, The Salmon of Doubt. The Salmon of Doubt is a continuation of the Dirk Gently books. However, this new published book is more than just the unfinished Dirk Gently saga.
The Salmon of Doubt is a compilation of many of the different writings of Douglas Adams. It covers everything from political opinions to his thoughts on the Hitchhiker books. The book is separated into three sections, Life, The Universe, and Everything. The section Life contains pieces of Adams life as he describes them. In one such article he talks of skipping class to listen to the latest Beatles album. The Universe is a section filled with the personal opinions of Adams. He talks about his opinions on religion as well as his favorite charity, the rhinos. Everything includes short fictions written by Adams. It also includes the unfinished Salmon of Doubt.
Just like many compilations of the like it can be very bland at times. If you are looking for a laugh-out-loud page-turner, then do not buy this book. You will not find much of the kind of Douglas Adams writing found in the Hitchhiker books. However, if you are interested in the man behind the books, then this book is excellent.
I love the writings of Douglas Adams. I bought this book thinking I was going to find another hilarious page-turner. While I was disappointed in that regard, I continued reading. I found the insight into Adams' life very interesting. I was most interested in stories of his life and how they influenced him.
It took me a long time to finish. The book could not keep my attention for long periods. I would have to read it one essay at a time and then take a break. There are parts and essays that are very boring. Every now and then there is a gem of pure genius but you really must search them out.
